I was in Coniston some years ago when my wife and daughter went pony treking. I got talking to the blacksmith who was there and we got onto Donald Campbell. It was his view that he was not a popular man in the area, as he was seen as a rich kid playing around the world. He lived his life on the edge all the time, on the edge of bankruptcy as well as many other things. Having said all that they were proud of what he acheived for Britain. He witnessed the crash and the thing that seemed to move him the most was talking about the weeks after they were still collecting ping pong balls from the water. These were apparently used to fill the spondons to give bouyancy if they leaked a little.

I cannot wait to hear it run again

You ought to email Bill Smith. I'm sure he'd be interested in details like that, if he doesn't already know.
