ricdiggle Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 I am about to change to broadband which means that I will no longer use Freeserve as my ISP. I think this will mean that www.diggle.fsnet.co.uk will cease to be. Unfortunately, for a lot of you this will mean that your avatars will be deleted from the net and won't work anymore. I may be wrong but I assume they will delete the site. NTL phone line is not compatible with freeserve so I can't keep the site going. NTL only give you 10 Megs of space and will not allow you to purchase any more. The site is about 15 megs at the moment but I have loads of new stuff for it. I will have to trim down lots of it before it finds it's new home. The Flash will be the first bit to go - I promise! I will do the avatars again but it will probably take me an age to do. If one of you IT people (ie all of you) can tell me how many hits the site has had, I would be very grateful - my counters seemed to stop working ages ago. Can I also thank all the people who sent in pics of their cars and sent kind words via E-mail. The site was a good laugh to make and I will try to make the next one even better. Think I might have a cry now! (I bet they don't delete the site now just to make me look like a nunney) Quote
ricdiggle Posted June 13, 2002 Author Posted June 13, 2002 Oh Bolox, I just had a thought - how do I remove the sticker from the rear of my car with my web address on it? Do I just peel it off? Quote
scott beeland Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 Cheers for hosting Site was excellent too. So; all you I.T bods Any volunteers to host pics for avtar use?? Quote
damianc Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 AFAIK you only need to use FS once very 90 days to keep it alive (if it's the free service). If your counters are broken the only way you'd get traffic stats is from freeserve themselves and they don't keep much data at all. Quote
ian crocker Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 10MB ? No option to buy any more ? Pipex give you 50MB free. How does the cable modem fee compare with the 23 quid Pipex charge per month ? Ian Quote
westy Posted June 14, 2002 Posted June 14, 2002 Ive got a business ISP account with unlimited space so if you want me to host the avatars just mail me at: avatars@techsl.com and i'll get it sorted. Westy. Quote
ricdiggle Posted June 14, 2002 Author Posted June 14, 2002 There's an offer on at the moment - I'm getting unlimited National Calls and a 128K broadband modem for £25 per month. The connection will be upgraded in the next few weeks to 512K for about another £5 or £10. We have also gone for their Digital TV as our SKY box is sick of being changed and never working! All the channels are costing us about another £15 bl**** bargain I reckon but we have been with them before and the service is about as bad as it gets - I'll have to wait and see. Quote
Stuart Posted June 15, 2002 Posted June 15, 2002 Ric, Can you transfer all our avatar pics to Westy's site en bloc? (Thanks for the kind offer Westy) Quote
Pete Collins Posted June 16, 2002 Posted June 16, 2002 It may be a strange idea but can't the WSCC web site host the avatars for WSCC members? That way they'll never need to be moved, Quote
ricdiggle Posted June 16, 2002 Author Posted June 16, 2002 Depending on the FTP needed for NTL, I can have them hosted before my site dissapears from freeserve. As for the WSCC hosting them, it takes a while to get them to look right and then send out instructions etc. Adrian already does a lot so you'd have to ask him. Quote
Stuart Posted June 17, 2002 Posted June 17, 2002 Thanks Ric, As an old fart who is not in IT I don't think that I do too badly with the techie stuff, but afraid I have no idea what an FTP is! Trust you will keep us posted as to whether you can get them onto your NTL site or not. Quote
ACW Posted June 17, 2002 Posted June 17, 2002 I am looking at a code modification to allow members to upload pictures in thier posts etc.. This should overcome this limitation.... However got plenty of testing to do first... Quote
ricdiggle Posted June 17, 2002 Author Posted June 17, 2002 Stuart, FTP - File Transfer Protocol There you go! All I know is, it is the doo-hicky that puts things from my P.C. onto Freeserve's big hard drive. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted June 17, 2002 Posted June 17, 2002 I've heard of File Transfer Protocol but whats doo-hicky If you've got a meta file you could send over with destructions in RTF Doo-hicky from the deepest south, where your cousins, sisters aunt is your wife. Don't you just hate all that IT jargon crap When someone first said to me re-boot your computer, was I the only one that was fully prepared to give that stupid tin-box a good kickin' and shout work you work. Seemed like a good idea to me and sometimes still does. Quote
