Sammy - I have the same diff as you. It is basically a standard differential unit from a Mk1/Mk2 Escort (known as an 'English' diff) which is housed in a Westfield alloy diff carrier, hence the Westfield logo on the back of the diff.

It is almost certainly a standard 'open' diff that you have. There weren't any English LSD produced as standard by Ford, so they are fairly rare. Other companies have made them, therefore supply is short and prices are high. You will pay £300+ for a second hand English LSD, or £500+ for a new one, while the later Westfield owners with the Sierra diff can pick an LSD up for their car for £40 from an old XR 4x4 Sierra or similar.

If you do buy an English LSD, then you don't need to change the drive shafts. The existing shafts will slot into it just fine.

If you wanted to convert to Sierra LSD diff, then you'll need to work out a way to mount it in the chassis, change the drive shafts, probably hubs too, maybe swap the drums for discs etc. Lots of work!

thinks thats right?!! :)

What sort of a job is it swapping the Diff in the Wesfield housing to say a Quaiffe ATB is it just a matter of dropping the old diff out the casing then putting the new one in meshing it up with the crown wheel, am i right?

Steve RST.

I have a 1994 seiw with a English diff with westy alloy housing and its a LSD. Tried the jacking rear end up turning a rear wheel (oposite side goes same way)better test is it leaves a number eleven on road not a number one...LOL

Have you any idea what sort it will be ie; plate type?

I wana know as it has a drip of oil from where alloy westy casing is fastened to front bit of diff and i wana get the right sort of oil should i ever need to top it up.

cheers.
