Jonah Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Trying to get an idea of how many people are using the 4age engine as the knowledge base seems a bit sparse compared to, Crossflow, VX, Zetec etc. Pete Jones Quote
thos Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 In the middle of an install at the moment (well I've an empty engine bay with an engine on the floor!), 16v small-port going on throttle bodies. Quote
Bluerallye Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 16v smallport with twin Dell'orto 45's (RAW's full 4A-GE install basically). Sounds lovely, almost BEC wail at the top end Plenty of tech advise / info about engine tuning on the Club 4AG forum but fook all on Westy installs Quote
davidgh Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Mmmmmm....... revs Phase 3, on Jenvey 45s and Omex 500. 185bhp at 7900rpm, 136 lb.ft. Thirty Speed Series class wins in two seasons -- until banned Quote
thos Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 David, have you much engine work done to get that figure ? Quote
jdinhants Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 16v Phase 3 with Jenveys and Omex 600. 143 bhp at the flywheel. Allegedley Raw exhaust system, bellhousing, shallow sump etc. No major problems with the install. Would like to fit Tracpac 1 which should take it up to 165bhp. J D Quote

thos Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Thanks David. What's the best way to do the cooling for the Phase 3 engines in a RWD config ? Is it worth changing to do RWD water pump etc ? Is the take-off at the rear of the block still required ? @jdinhants - Do Raw have a shallow sump now ? Any details - is it cut/shut, price ? I was going to look into the BPJ Services one today. Is it the same ? Quote

Is it the same ? Tom My header tank is connected both to the "rear" off-take and to the bottom hose. I'm not sure you couldn't simply blank off the rear connection point, but the dual connection is very simple (and costs almost no weight), so I've taken the "belt+braces" approach. To usurp John's question, I'm using a very large "winged and windowed" alloy short sump from Raw. Wasn't cheap though (I seem to remember £350). Whatever you do, don't cut/shut the standard one; surge kills high rev engines very quickly (personal experience). HTH Quote
thos Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Thanks. Sounds like the BPJ Services sump - http://www.information.gb.com/bpjservices/toyota04.pdf Quote
davidgh Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Thanks. Sounds like the BPJ Services sump - http://www.information.gb.com/bpjservices/toyota04.pdf Tom Looks identical -- but, according to Mel, it isn't. Whatever, the Raw one is a fabrication, rather than a casting. On a less positive note, my one experience of BPJ will not send me back in a hurry. David Quote
thos Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 On a less positive note, my one experience of BPJ will not send me back in a hurry. Really ? I heard good reports about them, second only to Richard Macer - mind you things didnt really work out with Richard anyway, but good god that man can talk. Put a decent order with Raw yesterday, will see how it turns out - had forgotten to ask about the sump though. There is moss growing in my empty engine bay at this stage !!! Quote

Make sure that the rear take off is connected into water system or you will cook the back of the engine, from memory the pumps are the same just the outlet and they RWD has a different pulley so you need to replace the crank pulley and the alternator as well. Is it the same ? It was fabricated by Raw and took 2-3 weeks. I think the cost was around £220? No problems with it either for ground clearance or oil surge. But the car has so far been road only, not like Guy's J D Quote
