Hi, does anyone run a BEC with a gear indicator? I have a 893cc megablade and am looking for one... are they easy to fit etc?  ???

Hello Jon,

I run busa engine in mine and the Geartronics one is a super bit of kit, works without giving false readings and just plugs directly into the bike loom.  I don't seem to be able to count to six when out on trackdays and is one of the better upgrades I have done.  Not sure what would be the best option for you though, but am sure someone will come along with answers.

I had an 893 cc megablade with the factory supplied gear indicator. It appeared to be a pair of mechanical/electrical contacts attached the gear lever rod and conected to a digital display on the dash which 'counted' forwards and backwards movements of the lever.

Mine wasn't really much kop as it missed lots of changes (the contacts got dirty)  and in the end was more of an irritation than a help.

Apologies for arriving several days late into this thread but I thought I'd best share the knowledge...

A couple of days ago I picked up one of the Acumen DG8 digital gear indicators. It seems to be highly recommended by the biking fraternity

It looks top-s**t, incredibly well put together, and is available in several bright LED colours (mine's blue)

The Linky Do Dah Day

RRP around £59.99

To be honest the internet prices on this unit aren't much better the high street motorcycle shops.

I bought mine from Heine Gerricke in Leeds but I know several other Leeds shops had them in stock too. This would suggest they are readily available all over the place.

Three wires to connect to your loom :-

1. Speedo sensor

2. Tacho sensor

3. Ignition on

The unit needs calibrating against each gear (as indeed all of these types of unit do)...

You stick it on a rolling road (or on rear axles stands if you dare?!?) and press the button. Stick it in first and hold it there until it request second. Shove to second, press the button and hold it... etc. etc.

It'll look the dog danglies sat under a plays-kool aeroscreen.

Best regards

Kyle

Hi there...

I am struggleing to get my DG8 to work on the megablade. All the wiring is as it should be im fairly sure but it wont recognise the gear and change to 3 bars then the next gear. It will work however as soon as i disconnect the speedo connection. But when i try calibrating it with that disconnected i cant get past 4th on the display. So perhaps i have the wiring wrong to the speedo?? There is only two outputs from the speedo and i have tried both with no joy.

Any advice appreciated!! im loosing my cool :-)

Thanks

I stand to be corrected but from my experience they will only work if using the bike speedo, I tried to fit one couple of years ago  with the westfield vdo guages and spent 2 days without success..it ended up on ebay  :(

Sounds like a cheeky piece of kit

What engine are you running

The engine is a Yamaha Fazer 1000 (very much like an R1)

So can the DG8 not be fitted if your running none motorcycle clocks?

the speedo just picks up its signal from a transducer off the quaife box, right?

Thanks...

I failed in my attempts on my busa  , I spoke with the guy at acumen and they said should be possible and had me solder in resistors etc in an attempt to make it work as I said I failed.. do a search there will be a thread or two on it..

fitted same unit on my zx12 westy and it worked first time but that had bike clocks.

the power of the search button  :D

I tried a few places for my 893 blade when I was looking for one earlier in the year. There was only one type that would seemingly work tho - one that sticks and reads magnets from your shaft. The feedback i got from folks on here was that it wasn't held in high regards - wouldn't pick up missed gears etc. The problem with a lot of them is that they are for an electronic speedo - like the Busa, ZX12 etc and I got told that my engine didn't cater for them - guess mine must be a mechanical speedo   I never looked any further into it tbh, and just learned to keep on pulling gears until there was no more to go

If you find one tho, give me a shout

Got a blade myself and have been looking around for a gear indicator, spoke to a chap the other day about what to get, any reccomendations and he said (in short) that due to the way the gearing works in the blade engine it wasn't suited to an electronic gear display, it could be done but he wouldn't want to put his mortage on it displaying the right gear, so I've given up on the idea at the moment unless something special comes along, its much more fun driving using the rev counter and the engine sound!

hi there- an update. the problems normally associated with trying to get a gear position indicator to work seems to be the lack of electronic pulses which come off the standard speedo sender. To overcome this i bought a speedo upgrade kit from Acumen electronics. It basically involves fixing small magnets somehwhere along the drive shaft (evenly spacing them out around the driveshaft) - you can use the dif casing and drive shaft. Then mount a small electronic sender unit near the revolving magnets (on dif casing). All thats left is to supply it with a 12v feed and job done. Note that the more magnets you fit the more pulses it will pick up and in return the more accurate it will read, 4magnets is just about enough, 8-10 preferably though. Then calibrate as usual and job done. Works perfectly first time.
