gordonandmaureen Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 are speed humps a serious problem with westys ? if so is there a special way to cross them if you have to? regards from gordon Quote
Phil. S Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I haven't had a problem wit them yet and I have only 3" ground clearance on my sump. The ones that go right across the road you just have to take very slowly. The ones that are split into square bumps need to be taken so that the sump goes over the valley between them. The real problem is when you don't see them. The only time my car has grounded was when I was going fast over some bumpy roads with a heavy passenger, but this only caused a few scrapes on the sump. The other thing to watch out for is manhole covers, especially when the road is being resurfaced, as they then stand about 4" high. (Someone recently destroyed their sump on one of these.) Basically, as long as you are careful, and your sump isn't ridiculously low, it shouldn't be a real problem. Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Never have problems with my SeiW but I and others have shallower sumps fitted , if a standard sump is fitted this is the lowest part of the car and can I believe cause problems . even so the "hmps" can usually be negotiated with care . Some "track oriented" cars sometimes have the odd moment because they run em a lower . Can often drive with just 2 O/S wheels over a lot of humps and the full width type are 'usually' flatter . Thing is to run slow if your not sure , you will here the car bottom out if its going to , with care you can still get over undamaged with a little scraping . Just kill the speed Quote
pistonbroke2 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I found out to my cost that if youre suspension is set to soft then you can hit trouble, esp. when braking hard and you havent spotted the barstewards until the last few yards. e.g. in my driveway. Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I did that as well. £12 secondhand thermostat housing from the scrappy and 12 for a new thermostat, o rings etc Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Yes they are! Just curious , what that green stuff is on the pipe end ? Quote
scott beeland Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Never have problems with my SeiW That's coz you run Massey Ferguson ground clearance Now I've worked out why you're strange.............The air must be thin that high up Quote
pistonbroke Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 QUOTE Now I've worked out why you're strange.............The air must be thin that high up dont take that altitude with me mate Ill let yer tyres down wiv me high heels thatl show yer An me air couldnt get much thinner if I was on't top O snowdon Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 The green is just the colour of the thermoset plastic. You break them if your gearbox flange hits a speed bump. The engine tilts forward then ping and the engine springs back. On a zetec the clearance to the chassis can be quite small so the thermostat housing shatters on the chassis. Quote

V8grunt Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 My sump and exhaust ground out on some of the local estates speed killers , I just go over them VERY SLOWLY, Could probably do something with the exhaust... but the sump is unmovable! Quote
markcoopers Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 The hoop under me A*** was the real pain, used to send sparks out the back like an F1 car.........untill I hit somethng more solid and that put pay to that. Quote
Big R Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 The biggest and most alarming problem I’ve had with speed bumps are the cars following me along the road. They don’t expect you to slow down as much as you have to and on one occasion I almost collected a Merc up my rear end. Despite what you might think, it wasn’t a pleasant experience …. Quote

Cheers for that Pat The reason I asked was mine once got smashed , I noticed the color and thought maybe some kind soul had broken it previous and glued it together with some green colour goo Quote
