jak Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 SWMBO as got a Megane CC 1.6 vvt. She loves it, goes OK - I wanted the 2.0 turbo, she wanted leather interior I lost It's just over a year old & done 10K miles. It handles OK, but is a bit flexible with the roof down on twisty rods. John Quote
KerryS Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 No ones mentioned Volvos yet My D5 V70 goes like stink and can be chipped to 226 bhp. However, my requirements were for a heavy-ish towcar, auto box, 4WD or AWD and not a Tonka toy ( = Discovery/Sorento/etc etc) which as far as I can remember left me with the Volvo or an Audi. Mine is now nearly 2 years old and expect to keep it until it's about 8 years old. I do about 13K pa and notwithstanding the economics, the low down torque is great for towing a 1400kg caravan. Ian Podmore Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I've driven both the 140 and 170 2.0 TDi in the A4 / Octavia is the last couple of days. How different the engines are! There's a much bigger difference than the 30bhp / 20ftlb headline figures. The 170 version starts boosting from about 1300rpm, the same as the 140, but it doesn't stop pulling hard until the limiter stops your fun. The 140 version however starts to tail off in the normal diesel way at 4000rpm. The 170 version is more economical as well. Shame that in 2nd gear it was difficult to get the power down in the 170 bhp VRS, especially on a wet or damp road. And Kerry (hello), I'm not looking at any Volvo's either Quote
Asterix Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Brian's after "absolute economy". My SEAT's shaded by a fair few number of cars, including Skoda in that respect. In the same vein, Volvo vs. Skoda?...not even a contest, Skoda wins by default, Volvo would be too embarrassed to go out on the pitch...and that's before servicing costs. (IMO of course) Quote

(IMO of course) Weight is main contributor to economy plus good engine of course, with diesel of a given engine size, the higher powered versions can provide the greatest economy if driven gently........ That is a big IF in some cases Quote

Mitchamidilly Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Brian, Not sure absolute economy should be your number one priority. Only travelling 7k a year you could afford to go for something like this which would easily offset the extra fuel by the residual value. 7k miles = £600 approx at 50 mpg Flog it next year and buy another...... Edited to say not much hobby gear but you would keep up Quote

Ginger Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 You could do worse than to look into the Rover 75/MG ZT CDT/i Tourer. Bags of kit for the money, huge space, cheap as chips at the moment, and 116bhp for the CDT and 131 for the CDTi (easily chippable - well, tuning-boxable) to 160ponies. Reliability is taken care of with the chain-driven BMW 2.0 diesel for those of you that think every Rover engine has HGF. Best news? MG are set to return this year with the MG7Z so it'll not be a model from a defunct manufacturer if you get the Zed. Quote

Don't get you. Cheap? Check. Reliable? Check. Sensible? Well, certainly a usable loadspace - check. Residuals? Going to be keeping it for 10 years - hardly an issue. Servicing? Any BMW dealer. Looking at Renaults and Vauxhalls, so clearly badge-snobbery isn't an issue... If it fulfills your requirements, frankly you'd have to be a bit of a dick not to consider one. bwouhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhaahhhahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahhah ahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahh" Quote
brianm Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 Steady lads, no falling out Thanks for the chance on the Meganne Jeff but the hatchback is just plain hideous in my eyes, I could not be the owner of one of those. However my daughter has the 1500cc 105 or 106 hp version of the car and the economy is unbelievable. Probably not many can picture the estate version of the meganne but it just looks like a proper medium sized modern estate without the lidicrous ars* *nd of the hatch. I can understand the comments regarding the low mileage and the loss of savings due to the higher purchase cost, but if all goes to plan I should be retired within 2 years, I will lose the use of company vehicles in day to day use, my mileage will go up as a result of that and more leisuretime, I will probably have a dog, and hopefully be carrying the fishing gear around most of the time. That may make my logic a little clearer. I haven't ruled any car out yet other than the larger estates that I just don't need the capacity of, and probably the more expensive German options for reason of purchase and parts cost. My last 4 cars have been VXs, (with the exception of a very short renault ownership time), and they have all been ultra reliable. But I have tried a couple, the diesel astra and vectra but am not entirely sold on either, both the meganne and the focus felt a "better" all round option. I usually take forever to choose a car, because I tend to keep them so long, so Ill keep on looking, but It looks like the Cyclone is moving to Scotland this weekend, so a bit of cash in the pocket may widen my options, Cheers.
