Boomy Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 I only just bothered (after all these years) to find out what a "sable" was.Not sure if that is a little worrying or whether most people also didn't know. So, when the song suggests; "Santa Baby, slip a sable under the tree, for me..." they are promoting the fur trade! Seems they were quite a popular thing to wear back in the day, a film star special! You can still buy fur coats etc made from them today. Moving on, a few years ago i also looked up some of the reasons Boxing Day was called Boxing day. It was something else i had never given much thought to. Quote

Sam-Kit car dreams Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 So why is boxing day called Boxing day, do tell I think it is something to do with passing boxes around the church to collect money in for the poor and needy. Quote
spence Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 So why is boxing day called Boxing day, do tell After falling out on christmas day. Families would arrange a boxing match to sort out all their problems. This would happen the day after christmas as they were too p*ssed to fight and kept falling over as soon as a punch was landed. Hence 'Boxing day' was created for the masses. Quote
TrevP Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 It goes back to when wealthy families had servents. The day after christmas the families would give the servents small treats in, you guessed it boxes, Hence the name boxing day. and with that here ends the lesson. Quote

neilwillis Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 Not the day when you struggle to get all the gifts back into their boxes so you can queue up in Argos for 4 hours to exchange them then? Quote
pistonbroke Posted December 24, 2006 Posted December 24, 2006 In days of yore chrissy day was for sobering up from't neet before Whats more th'ale was proper stuff then not like the watered down ferret p*** we call now call "stella" Proper folk were still far to hung over to do any co-ordinated activity such as "openeing boxes" So they opened all the pressies ont next day instead henceforth Boxing Day (this is a true story told to me by one of santa's elfs ) Quote
