Considering an BMW X5 3.0d to replace my 330d

Question is whats the Auto like (always had manuals) for towing.

Is it worth spending an Xtra £5K (£20K or £25K) for the later facelift model with the 218bhp engine, over the 184bhp job. ???  ???  ???

Also with the seats down is there enough room to kip in the back ???

Houses might be a bit cheaper............. :D

Although that might be offset by the insurance.....

Nanas Just been there and done that with X5. had both 184 and 218 bhp and had both remapped.

I sold mine as the  :arse: is falling out of them , currently depreciating £1100 per month on the 218bhp model and £650 p/month on 184 model. they have dropped the same for the last few months and I reckon they will continue hence  bailed out of mine  :arse:

Autos Tow absolutley fantastic without doubt the best towcar Ive ever been in  :t-up:

If you are set on a manual they will be much cheaper as they are very undesirable , expect to pay £2k less for manual  :t-up:  £2k less for no comms pack.. Ive recently seen a facelift 2005 3.0d sport with cloth / manual/ no comms only make £23k in auction.. cheap car if you can live without the spec but the kiss of death to sell back on again  :(

I had a very high specced 2005 3.0d sport  218 for 6 weeks had it remapped and really enjoyed the car but for me Mpg is the down side towing the westy I averaged quite an impressive  27mpg last time out (80mph ish  ) the killer for me was 23mpg round the doors with swmbo driving on the school run   :(

fwiw Ive just bought an old A6 for towing , single mattress fits perfect in the back    :xmas:   and 55mpg when Im not towing  :t-up:  :t-up:  :xmas:

there isnt a lot of difference looking at the 2 different models , visually its indicators/wheels.. the main difference is the gearbox 4x4 system and obviously common rail engine .. steering wheel is much nicer on facelift model

Having had both I would still go for the newer shape but would * have * to be in the money  ;)

"swmbo driving on the school run"

Thats all that needs to be said about these things. I'm sure they have a lovely elevated driving position but why compromise your car for that.

If you are used to the E46 the X5 will feel like a heavy barge.

Is this because the new model is out now ???

Might waite a few months and look again.

Partly, perhaps. But I would have thought they're being affected by the current climate of fear with regards to big 4x4s; it would appear from what you read and hear that the bottom's falling out of the market in a big way. My brother in Law was looking at a Range Rover Sport for his next car, but the way tax etc. is going on them has put him right off.

Andy, if you do decide to go ahead and get an auto 3.0d make sure the transmission oil is changed about every 40k miles otherwise you could get a very big bill for a replacement box  :bangshead:  :bangshead:  :bangshead:    ;)

BMW say the transmission is 'sealed' and the oil doesn't need changing as the oil will last the life of the box, what they don't say is that if used for towing the life of the box will be only 80k miles    :arse:

Oh, and get it dealer supplied and serviced and buy the extended warranty if you go over the 3yr/60k limit  ;)
