moochofun Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 Howdy, I wouldn't say I'm new to the worlds of westfields or kitcars in general (used to do hill climbing with the old man in the 90's and who also currently owns an Ultima GTR) but am new to the prospect of owning one. I've been thinking more about it lately due to coming away from bike racing - broken leg . Well i've still got to fuel my need for speed, erm i mean adrenalin . I noticed that whilst at Top Marques track days last year at Knckhill, the Ultima wasn't getting too far away from the westfields and caterhams that turned up. So I've narrowed it down to buying either a megabusa or a megablade - don't ask me why, maybe it's the morotrbike link? Obviously the megabusa is more powerful but is there a massive difference? And is it worth the extra money they seem to command? Both supposedly post 4 second 0-60 times....... I imagine both are around the same weight and handle the same too. I have never ridden in one either so what you don't know doesn't hurt. As I said, I've got hillclimb experience, motorbike experience and also more lately bought myself a 'little' 125 gearbox kart to razz about on - possibility of racing it too in 2007. Anyway bletherin on.............................. Can I have advice from those in the know, their verdict between the two, things to look out for when viewing to buy (buyer's guide anywhere?) etc etc. Any help is much appreciated and who knows.........I may be joining the westfield brotherhood soon Quote
JeffC Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 welcome Ive had blade and busa powered westys.. 0-60 times quoted are a little exagerated , ive tried with mine (busa)and struggle to do it in early 4"s (video of it on my website ) car for car busa will have around an extra 100bhp per ton and its noticable driving both cars .. Busa is a lump torquey than the blade and will pretty much pass a blade anywhere in the speeds on a straight road .. saying that on a twisty track there will not be a lot in it ,faster tracks will show the difference more . both cars over 100mph will be a little disapointing as aerodynamics take over, obviously more so on the blade . they do make it up on braking though as you have prob seen either cars will show up very expensive cars up on track If your budget dictates imho buy the busa but make sure it is dry sumped if you plan on doing track use on sticky tyres.. plenty out there for sale at the mo. Welcome nothing like opening a can of worms on your fist post We have a pretty well sorted Blade and at Elvington recently it held it's own against Jeff's Busa but as Mr C has pointed out a Busa is far torqueyer and quicker in a straight line wether or not that additional power is worth the extra £2,000-£3,000 that Busa command over a Blade is another matter, that said I would love to stick a Busa engine in the Tangerine tornado so I could deal with Jefferey and company with less effort Quote
moochofun Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 Thanks for the replies guys, your views are welcome. Basically by the sound of it the Busa seems to be the way to go power wise, but there is an ever so luverly yellow megablade in the classifieds. I wonder what sort of power upgrade or tuning that you can do to the Honda motor for that extra few grand?? Turbo? Looks like I've just answered my own question I'm sure a megablade will be more than enough for me to start with, as I've become a little afraid of driving at high speeds on the road lately. Poofy I know........... Quote
moochofun Posted November 29, 2006 Author Posted November 29, 2006 Just seen a megabird for sale too...................christ that throws another ingredient into the pot How does the Blackbird engine compare......in reality terms? Quote
higgsti Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 i have both and to be honest there isnt a great deal between them .the blade ive had for 3 years and its been a cracking car .the main difference is you need to change gear more often in the blade due to torque the blade can be had for a lot less than the busa if you look its not far of the cost of a busa engine instal if you could do it all yourself .ive got both for sale and whichever sells first i will be happy with the remainig car whichever that is Quote
adam1330 Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 I wonder what sort of power upgrade or tuning that you can do to the Honda motor for that extra few grand?? Turbo? John, one of the Surrey A/O's, has got a Turbo Megablade Quote
Bazzer Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Turbo charging a Blade or Busa is not for the Technically or financially challenged. I t will take much more money and effort than you would expect. I am speaking from experience Cheers Bazzer Quote
cast iron Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 as to why a Busa is more expensive, well from New Suzuki refuse to sell engines so a complete bike has to be bought and the frame scrapped . The Busa also uses a dry sump system whereas blades dont. nowadays both engines can be sourced second hand, but the Busa motors are still more expensive. Quote
moochofun Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 Hmmm lots to think about. How much does it cost to put in a reverse box to a megablade that hasn't got one in initially? Is there a different diff to go in? Please bear my ignorance - total newbie Quote
Terry Everall Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Reverse box from Westfield about £1200? and then short front and long rear props to connect from engine to r/box and r/box to diff Conversion would not be cheap IMHO Quote
Bazzer Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 Buying a reverse box and props from someone who is ditching reverse would be the cheapest way of doing it. If you are not competing though it might be worth trying without !! Bazzer Quote

Bazzer Right enough.........it's not like I'm going to be taking it to Tesco's! £1200 is about 10% of the cars value, so I'll weigh it up against that I suppose - and if I find it infuriating pushing backwards! Thanks again guys, this forum is great for Q&A sessions! Quote
higgsti Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 the cars im selling both have reverse Quote
