Hammy Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 This may be a bit of a dumb question, Having pulled my engine out over the weekend it , i've decided it needs the clutch replacing - the friction plate appears to be some form of competetion plate and is "burnt" although there is some wear left. I want a standard clutch (complete) but what do I ask the parts man ?? Engine is X/flow, gearbox is 4 speed, with reverse on the right and down. Do i need to be aware of different numbers of spines ? thx in advance Quote
Jenko Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 I have a cvh, but the clutch and flywheel are xflow......As I'm putting a 2ltr engine in my car, I have replaced the clutch cover, and clutch plate for ap racing items..... The clutch is actually in good condition and the pressure plate is unworn having only done 7k miles....Yours for a tenna plus postage if you want to try it......See pic below for spline number (clutch is 190mm).... Failing that, if you go down the ap route, don't expect any change from £180.... If someone fitted a racing clutch and left the pressure plate as standard, that might have been the problem. It's important to make sure the pressure plate is up to the job , as the clamping forces required if you are thrashing the car can help save the clutch. Quote
Hammy Posted November 20, 2006 Author Posted November 20, 2006 Spine number looks good ( i.e there are lots of them haven't counted). Postage might be outragous, I'll pm you with contact detaills PM sent late am. Quote
Hammy Posted November 20, 2006 Author Posted November 20, 2006 OK , I'll check the spline count tonight and get back, looks like a sale ! Thx Quote
Jenko Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Also, check the clutch cover spring shapes, there were a number of these available, some were straight, other 'S' shaped.....The one I have is 'S'' shaped (ends are 'curly')... Quote
RichB Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Jenko, your clutch plate will have a 1" 23 spline plate for a type-9 5-speed box, Hammy's 4-speed box wll probably be 7/8" 20 spline, suitable clutch kit will be Mk2 Escort or Mk3/4 Cortina (cover will be the some though). Quote
Hammy Posted November 21, 2006 Author Posted November 21, 2006 I've counted my spines - difficult in a dark garage !! I actually counted 21 (certainly not 23 anyway) , but what RichB is saying is therefore probably correct and the clutch is not suitable. I think I've enough info to go forth and make a nuisance of myself in the local motorfactors - thx for the help Quote
Jenko Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Well spotted Rich.......Sorry Hamy, didn't read the bit about a 4 speed.......You may wan tto speak to burton...... Quote
