John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 I am looking to be able to record some incar footage of sprints next year for my own viewing. What is an economical method of doing so in terms of equipement? I would like a bullet cam of some kind and a means of recording onto an SD card so that I can use my PC to view the videos. So I will need a bullet cam and mount and a means of recording. Cheap and cheerful with reasonable results will suffice. What do folk recommend? I have seen oryZ61398QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting" target="_blank">this device on ebay. Will this do the job? What bullet cams and mounts are folk using? Will I need anything else? Thanks, John Quote

brayspeed Posted November 11, 2006 Posted November 11, 2006 I can suppy cameras with DVD quality, tryed and tested, IMHO the BEST, £160 NEW you will need a camcorder with Av/in aswell http://www.brayspeed.co.uk/assets....006.wmv Tony Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Thanks but I was hoping to pay much less including everything required. John Quote
gee_fin Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 Problem with that type of device is quality, there isn't a solid state or hard drive player I've found for sub £2k that can encode at DV quality. Hard drive based is kind of a no go anyway due to the vibration in a car. But for the cheaper solid state stuff it's just not high enough quality for DV - Internet quality yes, DV quality no. Friends have been using this http://www.chasecam.com/ Does everything you'd want it to (apart from DV quality) but it's good-to-high quality for Internet usage. Apparantly they're rubbish at delivering quickly but *do* deliver. And the box does everything you'd want. I'm still using a DV cam with AV-in bullet cam as it's the only way to guarantee the quality short of spending £2k+ on a state of the art solid state setup... Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 12, 2006 Author Posted November 12, 2006 Thanks GF but surely there is a way of doing it for not a loty of dosh? My digital camera records video and that was only £100. Would something along similar lines but more compact and able to use a bullet cam be ideal? If so what? Quote
adhawkins Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 I have a Nisis DV6. Small, compact, records about 30 mins of video at 1024x768 onto an SD card. Cost me about 100 quid, I use a motorsport clamp to mount it to my roll bar. Footage example here. This isn't the full quality of the video, it's been resized for internet viewing. However, I've had footage taken from the camera and stuck onto DVD before now. It's perfectly watchable. Andy Quote
gee_fin Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 For DV quality, only sensibly affordable way currently is normal DV cam (with AV in) and bulletcam. I'm sure solid state will drop to sensible at some point soon but currently it aint Quote
windy Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 John, Try this Camera There is some footage on his site too. Just curious - are you wanting to keep an eye on your wheelnuts then - check they are not coming loose? Quote
cast iron Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 take a canvas and some oil paints with you, should be quick enough Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 Thanks Windy. I am looking at one of these They seem to look OK to me and if bought of ebay from the states are chepaer than UK prices. I have also been advised about a Mustek DV8200 which is another possibility. i'm trying to avoid wires and gubbins. Cast Iron - Quote

Cast Iron - sorry John couldnt resist seriously though Oregon Scientific IMHO make quite cheap stuff, I read the claims but wouldn't believe it till I had handled one. Also they have distributors in the UK Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted November 30, 2006 Author Posted November 30, 2006 Theres a sample video on the Oregon site if you go dep enough into the product spec. The item in the UK is as much as (if not more than) the price is in $ so its cheaper by far to buy on line in $ Quote
MartinH Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 There is some footage on his site too. The first Barkston video just reassures me that I made the right decision and came home. Quote
greeny Posted November 30, 2006 Posted November 30, 2006 I used a Mustek PVR-A1 recorder with a Sony 480TVL Bullet Cam from RF Concepts at a few events this year after seeing it on the zetecinside website and because it was a cheap solution! To be honest I was a bit dissapointed with the quality. It's ok when you're not moving but as soon as you get any speed the picture just blurs! I guess this is down to the Mustek recorder but I got it for nowt so it's not a complete disaster! Looking at getting a Mini-DV recorder for next year which should hopefully be much better. Here's one I made earlier. [ Quote
