:( A mate brought a y reg saab 93 estate 2.3 lpt about 10 months ago.Had a new turbo about 2 months ago under garage warranty but still had to fork out about 500 quid for some other bit that wasn,t covered! About 3 weeks ago went away to the south coast. On the way there the engine just stopped.Called RAC ,guy said the engine was b****ered.Got towed back to a garage and had engine removed but its melted itself (block & head ).

Garage has said about 3.5k plus fitting plus vat for a new engine .Struggle to find a recon one but still around 2 K plus fitting plus vat.Local garage offered him 200 quid as it stood (full leather and electrics no body damage )

Just wondered if anyone ever had the same issues with a saab and what they did ??

Either way a car brought for 4 K 10 months ago now worth 200 quid is a bit rough  :(  :(

Any help appreciated guys

Hi

First problem. He took it to a garage! they know he knows nothing!!! :durr:

What he should have done is remove the head and sump if possible in situ,in the car,at home,or his mates garage( if he's got any mates!)

Carefull examination of all parts by himself (if he has a mechanical apptitude) or competant mate.

Wost scenario shagged block and head, otherwise if engine just came to a standstill, possible NO major damage,

Would be best to remove all pistons and re-ring if pistons are OK. check block for scoring.

dismantle head and check for cracks, warping, valve damage and guide wear/damage.

If head OK replace any burnt/damaged valves cracked guides etc,

Put back together. CHECK ALL OILWAYS for blockage as oil starvation seems to be the culprit,

If the above seems to complicated or impossible, go on line with "findapart" and see if you can get something cheaper than you have been quoted

happy mending! :p

Go back to the garage that repaired it in the first place and insist that the engine failure was due to their poor workmanship.

Find out from a Saab source if there is a specific routine for replacing the Turbo to see if they followed it.

As Saab have only been making 93 estates since last year I would have thought that the Saab warranty would cover it for 3 years, unless its done a stupid mileage.

It just shows you what happens when GM get their grubby mites on a decent car manufacture.

Coyote:

If you read your quoted original post then you'll see it's a Y-reg 93. 5 years old and therefore way beyond the original manufacturers warranty I would assume.

As above people have said. You need to find the reason for failure.

1) If this is related in anyway to Turbo then you have comeback on the garage that replaced it.

2) You can then make an educated decision on sourcing a replacement unit.

Like I said Saab did not start making 93 Estates until 2005.

I presume he means the old shape 93 3/5 door hatchback then.

The 2.3 Turbo engines have to have very regular oil changes as they suffer from a sludge build up which eventually kills the engines.

My 95 suffered a blown turbo and I replaced it with one from Abbott Racing who do an upgraded turbo with bigger oil ducts through it for the same price as the Saab one.

It was replaced by an independent Saab specialist I use (car had full dealer service up till then).

He said that the recall mod on the breather system (which makes the sludge problem worse) had not been done, so much for dealer servicing then.

When the turbo was replaced the whole old system was cleaned out including removing the sump and cleaning it.  If this is not done then it will suffer the again in the not distant future. Saab DO NOT do this when they replace Turbos.

It is interesting that Abbott will not guarantee their turbos unless the above is done when the turbo is fitted.

This problem is well known for the 2.3lpt 95 but was not known for affecting the 93 or 9000 2.3lpt models.

The 95 Aero and hot models did not suffer from this.

if it were me I would be looking at the option of  a gallon of unleaded and a box of matches

:) Cheers for the reply,s

Findapart was a good result.got a recon down to a grand or used delivered for 400 quid !!!

Its definetly a 2000 car on a y plate and definetly an estate.I beleive the turbo was fitted by a saab dealer. The engines in bits and he has to remove it from the garage floor this week.I,ll try and have a butchers at it.

Cheers again for the response.

Then it's definitely not a 9-3, it'll be a 9-5. Not that it matters, same engine. :)

I am glad someone agrees with me.  :D

As you have another engine out of the car do yourself a favour and make sure you clean it out as by my above post. Then make sure you do the oil changes at good intervals.

John

PS make sure the breather mod is done.
