a4gom Posted October 29, 2006 Posted October 29, 2006 I know its possibe these days to own a domain name and have it hosted for very little money but are there any good opportunities out there at the moment to do it for free? I've seen offers in the past where you get it free. Just want to create a simple site for the lads rugby team, 4 or 5 pages, standard stuff about us, team and player photo's directions and fixtures. He plays for a new under 9's team, they are starting from scratch and have no funds yet so don't want to commit them to anything when the money is needed for kit etc. Any advice gratefully received Quote
Fat Albert Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 The RFU have a free site hosting service, you can use it for hosting a simple web site or to run the entire club operation, amazing to see an English national sporting body that uses joined up thinking (at least off the pitch ) There are loads of others, my rugby club uses this one for its public site Quote
a4gom Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 Bin doing quite a bit of searching and found a number of places to do it but they all want to add advertising and your domain name ends up twice as long as you want by the time you've added their part Out of the free ones anyone know which adds the least advertising and adds the least to the domain name? I know some of you out there have you're own site who do use.? Perhaps I need to pay for it or try sort some sort of sponsorship If we do manage to get some money towards it can anyone tell me how much this is going to cost? I think our motor club pays £24 a year for hosting and £25 every two years to keep the domain name registered. Is this standard? Calling Mr Hawkins i seem to recall you may know something about this sort of thing I Quote
a4gom Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 Thanks Albert, I might get shot putting it on the first one as there is a word beginning with L missing but i'll have a look at the second option. Whats the address of your clubs site so I can have a look? Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I use gently hosting (Andy Hawkins)for about £4 a month or something like that Buzz Quote
a4gom Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 There are loads of others, my rugby club uses this one for its public site I've had a look at that but you need to sign in using one of their connections to upload / manage the site so thats another monthly cost. Quote

Hammy Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I've used dot.tk , which is free if your hit count exceeds a certain figure - its a referer site, which menas you use the web space given to you by your Internet provider and your domain name simply redirects the browser to your nominated URL in your web space; as in: www.delta-hawks.tk This redirects you http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hamhouse/dhawks (which is harder to spell). I'd recommend them if you are playing about as its free to play with. www.lcn.biz are also very good and cheap £25 for 2 years and provide similar re-directors I've bought the snappily titled http://www. quintadolagoencosta.com . They can also host for more ££ [This site also redirects to my NTl Web space]. Quote

a4gom Posted October 31, 2006 Author Posted October 31, 2006 thanks for your help, the dot.tk thing looks good at the moment to get me up n running till we have had chance to discuss / develop and work out financing this. I have put out some feelers to the local computer shops for sponsorship. See what happens Quote
