oioi Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 how bad is the TDi compared to the TDCi? The TDCi's are a bit over my budget and am tempted by the TDi. IS it a case of dont touch, or is it just a little rough and ready. what sort of mpg does the TDi return? also seen a couple of 307s HDi at reasonable price but lots of people have warned me of those. is that fair? Scottish Bloke Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 The TDi is the more reliable car. I can see them fixing TDCI's from my office window. I opted for a TDi when I bought one for my old dear about six months ago. MPG about the same but a bit down on power rich Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I don't know if the difference is the same as for the Mondeo TDDi and TDCi. If so, then the engine is the same 16v Duratorq unit but the fuel delivery system is respectively direct injection or common rail. As Scottish Bloke said, the popular view is that with earlier cars of the common rail type reliability is suspect but the direct injection is okay. My TDDi Mondeo seems fine at over 80k miles (frantically touching wood) Quote

bozblat Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 just a little note for you, i used to sell peugeot and the 307 was released in a rush to replace the 306 and hence not fully sorted and there was an awful lot of problems, although most should have been sorted by now and apart from the problems they are a spot on car. don't know if i am correct but didnt ford go in with peugeot on the development of diesel engines (i.e. bought of the shelf peugeot diesels), think it was when power jumped to a 1.6 110bhp and 2.0 130bhp, same as whats in the peugeots. Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 This forum might yield confirmation. I seem to remember that the Peugeot collaboration stopped with the Duratorq. Might be wrong though. edited 'cos I knew 'collaberation' looked wrong Quote
JeffC Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 focus tddi over tdci every time.. tdci is a time bomb ticking I had a succession of tddi foci for swmbo a few years ago with some scarey high miles and every one was spot on one I still see as a customer has it and its now done 200k and been trouble free.. and saw 50mpg regularily Quote
samcooke Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Brother in law has a TDDi Mundano with 165k on it, feels great and costs nish to run. The original exhaust lasted until 150k... The TDCi is argued to be a bit smoother but realistically if smoothness is high on your list neither is worth considering. If you buy a Peugeot hope and pray that it never goes wrong or needs servicing. The two Peugeot dealers I've had dealings with have made me want to end my life in frustration. I make it my goal in life to burn every Peugeot I see to ensure no other poor soul has to go through what I did. Quote
Yobbo Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 The current Focus TDCi Diesel is shared with Peugeot Citroen. Have been following the Focus/C-Max forums for some time as I have been thinking of buying one as a second car. The 2.0litre TDCi has had a few teething problems (mainly EGR valve related) but the latest ones are okay and new valves of a different design have fixed the older ones . The 1.6 TDCi is slightly more reliable than the 2.0 based on the number that seem to go wrong on the forums, but that is only based on what you read. The Dual mass flywheels in all TDCi's have given problems as well which is an engine out job. Think very carefully before buying a diesel automatic, so go and read peoples experiences. People are generally very happy with the Focus diesels though as they drive well. I will be buying a new C-Max TDCi early next year. TDDi generally gets a good press, as its slightly old school technology and is generally reliable even at high mileages. Quote
