Stripping LSD

Hi guys, Car will be getting tucked up for winter soon and one of the jobs i wana do is remove & split the LSD.

I posted questions before about it as i didnt know what sort it was, (sent blatters some pics when he was tring to identify it for me.)

He said it was Mk2 escort diff with westfield casing on back, but no way of telling whats inside it with out stripping it.

So i need to get it apart and see if its plate type or not.

So where do i begin?

not even sure how to start and remove it, ie;what order should i do things in. Then how do i split it & when i do will it all fall out from inside?

As you can tell i am not a mechanic but have done basic things like changed wheel bearings, set tappets n stuff.

I really would like to tackle it myself so any advice is most welcome.

cheers.

IMHO if you havent got the tools for this job, let the experts do it.

I've o'hauled 100's of various diff's in a previous life  :D

and still I take my diff to BGH Geartech. Its not worth the agro for £90 ish

Anyway that my pennies worth, If you do decide to "DIY" I'll gladly help where I can.

Why  ???  ???  ???  do you have a problem with it ?  ???  If you do, I think it is advisable as Paul has stated to take it to someone who knows what they are doing. If it works leave well alone.  :p

:D  :D  :D  :D

I take it you don't want to strip and refurbish the diff, but want to take it off just to what you have got. If that's right, it's a pretty straightforward job. Jack it up and secure. Get the rear wheels off. Get under the car and undo the four prop shaft bolts at the diff end.  Then undo the top wishbone bolt by the rear upright so that the upright falls outwards. This will give you just enough space to get the drive shafts out of the diff. Undo the four bolts securing the diff to teh chassis This is easiest if you remove the boot box. It's then a case of manouvering the diff out through the chassis rails. Once the diff is out, you just need to undo the bolts securing it to the casing and your done. Make sure there's something to catch the oil though. You can then photograph the internals and post the picture up here to see what you have. A lot of effort just to satisfy your curiousity though.

Cheers for that Phil,

As for others that have posted i should have been more clear with why i was doing it.

I have an oil leak from it. Not much just a couple of drips overnight after i have been out in it.

I wanted to get some oil for topping up but was not sure what to get thats when i was told on here that i had to find out what sort of LSD it was.

It didnt look too big a job to get diff off, but was unsure if when i split it whether bits would come out from inside all over shop & i would need special tools to get it back together.

thanks guys.
