Just a question for all you computer experts :D  :D

I posted so bits for sale this afternoon and then edited the posts to add some pictures.

On coming back to view the adds this evening the pictures have gone and they are replaced with a square with a red cross in the middle?

I have NO idea where they have gone.

It could be an issue with gently hosting as it seems a few adds are missing pics and some avatars hosted with gently have disappeared aswell.

Mr Hawkins will know i'm sure :)

Oh and in future, it would probably make things a bit neater and easier to keep track of if you simply advertised all your items in one post matey.

Virtual house keeping :D

Little red cross means the pics can'r be accessed - wherever the pics are being hosted is either down or the security settings don't allow people to view them

No problems as far as I'm aware with Gently Hosting's avatar service.

Check your firewall settings match the advice given in the thread in my sig.

This happened once before iirc mate, yet wasn't firewall/security related.I can't remember what the reason was behind it now?.

Currently i can't see anyones avatars or images that use GH, but all the others are fine.

As with last time, nothing has changed on my PC at least, they were all their this morning and have been since the last time this happened.

Was it ISP related or something last time?. I seem to remember they just all appeared again a short while later.

There was a routing problem a while back that meant that some people's ISPs couldn't see the server, while other people could.

In this case, the image that is being referenced does not exist on the avatar service. I suspect it's been deleted.

Oh right, my bad, i assumed if you had say 15 items, putting up 15 posts just made the place untidy :D

Just cos I disagree, doesn't mean I'm right :)

I generally only read an advert if it looks like something I might be interested in. An advert who's title is 'Loads of stuff for sale' is unlikely to attract my attention.

Plus, as items sell it's a lot easier to close individual topics (hint hint) so that people can easily tell whether the item is still available.

But that's me :)

Do you know what actually happens routing wise to stop my ISP seeing those images once in a blue moon?.

It's not a big deal of course, just curious really as i know naff all about such things!.

Trying to work out how to explain this in a non technical fashion.

The internet works much like the post office does. A letter from New York to my house in Swindon goes to the guys local post office in the States. From there, it'll probably go to a regional sorting office. From there, it'll go to an international transit centre. It'll arrive at a similar transit centre in the UK. From there, it'll probably go to a regional sorting office in Wiltshire, then to a local sorting office in Swindon. Finally it'll go to my postman, who sticks it in my letter box.

For each of these 'hops', each office needs to know where to send the letter to next.

On the internet, occasionally one of these centres (routers) will 'forget' how to get to another location on the internet (which router it should send the data on to next). When this happens, bits of the Internet suddenlly don't know how to get to other bits.

Clear as mud I bet :)

Is there any reason why this would only ever happen to me on this site now and again?.

As with last time, i can no longer see anything using GH.

It doesnt just happen to you. GH piccies come and go from my computer too...
