windy Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Got an email from a director at at work today suggesting we don't use our cars on Friday because its a national no car day. Got me thinking. Maybe I should phone in to say i can't get to work, no public transport supports my route to work etc etc, then go for a gas guzzling blat in the Escort on empty roads just to stick 2 fingers up to the tree hugging environmentalists. Could be fun - what do you reckon? I remember the last time I did this was during the fuel strike when the only pump left with fuel at my local garage was LRP. Stopped everyone else filling up because the nozzle didn't fit their unleaded cars. Didn't stop me having fun driving to work in the westy though. Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Yep, Friday will see my usual run back down South from Liverpool. Just me in the Jag and 25mpg. Quote
peterg Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Ironically, Gill's car is going in for a service on friday so I'll be following her into Cheltenham and bringing her home then same again in the afternoon to collect it as there's no public transport way of getting to the garage from our place (well, not in less than a day anyway...) might well go for a blast on the motorbike as well just for good measure Quote

dern Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 I remember the last time I did this was during the fuel strike when the only pump left with fuel at my local garage was LRP. Stopped everyone else filling up because the nozzle didn't fit their unleaded cars. Didn't stop me having fun driving to work in the westy though. I was on the bike during the fuel strike and had to commute 40 miles each way. I suggested to the wife that although her car had a full tank that she cycle to work as it was only 2 miles away and then I could syphon her petrol in to the bike and everyone was happy.... except that on the very first day she fell off her bike and broke her wrist (a few weeks before we were due to go on holiday) and then I found that I couldn't syphon the petrol out of her car anyway due to some special device that stopped people doing just that. I'm sure at some point we'll look back and laugh about it Quote
Phil. S Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 I plan to abide by this national no drive day. I'll be driving round a French race track on Friday. Quote
Thrustyjust Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Hopefully my commute to Slough will be a little bit easier if everyone leaves their cars at home,as I cruise in the diseasel.Quicker than the 1 3/4hrs it took today to do 35 miles anyway. Quote
windy Posted September 21, 2006 Author Posted September 21, 2006 QUOTE Get your bike out and be a good boy I've never tried cycling in the fast lane of the motorway, have you? Quote
Vinny's Westie Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Everyone must be taking notice, my drive in today took half the time, just like the school holidays. Why don't they have this everyday??? Quote
studbuckle Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 I've abided by the no 'car' day as i've commuted into the office today in the 'picnic bus' aka Citroen Picasso.... in no way can you call that a 'car' Quote
Bananaman Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 I'm gonna find it difficult to do 2 site visits on foot from Manchester 1 in N.Wales and the other on the Wirral. Mabe i'll try an ecconomy run, see if i can get close to 60mpg......... I'll report back later with stats... Quote
adhawkins Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Ah, so that's why I got in to work in 3/4 of the time it usually takes me Would love to use public transport to get to work, but I'd have to go via Reading (to get from Swindon to Newbury). Andy Quote
