scruffythefirst Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 As title really, I need some boating qualifications on my CV and have been mucking about in boats a fair bit recently. Is this a good one to do and is £175 for 2 days a good price? Quote
kipford Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 From my dinghy days I believe RYA Powerboat level 2 is highest rating you can get in the UK and you need this before you can race a powerboat in the UK! Check first you do not have had to do RYA L1 first! RYA L1 for dinghies is 2 days, while RYA L1/L2 combined course for Dinghies is 4 days and costs around £250/£300. Worth shopping around as lots of people do it. Have fun Quote
Chasmon Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Believe I did the stage 2 power boat course compressed into a single day. Skipped some of the basics of launching and such. I will try and dig out the name of the chap who ran the course but Paul Glatzel rings a bell... If you've spent much time in boats you should find it pretty straight forward I would think. The Yachting qualifications seem much more difficult. Edited to add: Crikey must have some brain cells left after the weekend after all: Paul Glatzel Price is £290 for the two days... Quote
peterg Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Seafever Powerboat training hereI did my L1 and L2 Powerboat course with Peter White a good few years ago now He's written loads of books about all sorts of motorboating and is highly regarded....lots of info on his website about the various levels etc Someone else paid for me and Mrs G as I'd done a lot of business with this guy and he was all for people getting proper qualifications for boaty stuff (he was a dive instructor amongst other things) - I think it was around £500 for both of us for two days and was very thorough and enjoyable Oh, and Peter White can come to you (well, to your nearest bit of sea) rather than you having to travel to him. SteveC Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 I did mine at the Nottingham watersports centre, excellent fun, 2 days thrashing around in RIB's playing James Bond chase games - could almost here the theme music as you get the boat on full power and heal it over as far as it would go to outwit the villian while hacking the fishermen off and rescuing windsurfers as well. A hoot Quote
peterg Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 and did all that chasing around like James Bond include a practical review of the major points of the colregs? Quote

Yobbo Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Did mine over 2 days but had been driving boats for years but still found the manoevering tests a challenge as we had a fierce crosswind. Check to make sure that the pupil teacher ratio doesn't exceed 3:1 as that is the RYA requirement for you to get the most out of it. There are I think 3 higher certificates than Level 2; Intermediate powerboat Advanced powerboat Day and night safety boat Quote
