Martin Keene Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Just had a phone call asking me to go for an interview for a job for a Tendering Engineer at a local engineering company. However, I went out and bought a new suit for the wedding, and promptly threw out the old was as it was getting on a bit, and I don't really want to wear the new one for a interview first. Do you think it is bad form to go to an interview in just a shirt, tie and trousers? I reckon if I didn't go in a suit and drop something in the conversation on the way from reception about getting married in a couple of weeks and throwing out my old suit I should be fine. If it makes any difference, it is not the kind of job where you'd be expected to wear a suit to work and I'd be going for the interview as I would be dressed if I got the job. Quote
KerryS Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I think I'd wear sock and shoes too Kerry PS Think I'd add a jacket too. Quote
worldwidewebs Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 If you'll be going to work in a shirt/tie, then personally I would definately go in a suit. Everyone else will so the only conclusion the interviewer can draw is that you're not that interested in the job. Don't put yourself at a disadvantage at stage 1. Either buy a new suit or use the one you have. Quote
Rob Navin Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I have done both. Both of the jobs that I went to in shirt and tie only I ended up getting the job. ( That said the same is true for the Suit interviews.) The major difference for me was I felt uneasy without a suit at both. Both were unintentional on my part. One I got away with as the person interviewing me was only wearing a shirt with no tie. The other person was fully suited and I had to make my excusses ! My choice from now on is a suit at all times. Martin I'm sure it'd be fine, no need to explain....... Quote
Tomcat Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I interview quite a lot of people and (rightly or wrongly) appearance does count - although you never write anything in the interview notes about it (unless hideously bad) it just gives you a better feeling if the candidate turns up looking like they have made the effort. Go with a suit every time, even if it has to be a Burtons sale rail special!! HTH Jan Quote
peterg Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 QUOTE even if it has to be a Burtons sale rail special but that's what he's wearing to the wedding Quote
The Great Fandango Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 It's gotta be a suit everytime my friend. Get yourself down to Tescos or Asda. You can pick up a fairly good looking suit for under £60. Last summer, Asda went mad and reduced all their suits to £40 in a summer sale. I bought 3 suits each with a second pair of trousers - Total spend = £132.00! They're all still perfectly fine and I've even had positive comments about a couple of them! (machine washable too!) Martin Keene Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 Hmm, looks like I'll be borrowing one off my Dad or a Matalan special it will be! Quote
Liam Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Hmm, looks like I'll be borrowing one off my Dad or a Matalan special it will be! I would say that's the right decision Martin. Try Tesco's. I bought Andy a black suit from there for £30 for his friends wedding. If you only wear it once it doesn't matter. Having said that, it wasn't a bad suit for £30. Quote
Phil. S Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Personally I think you'd be fine just buying or borrowing a jacket to go with your trousers, etc., rather than a suit, though of course a suit would be fine. What's important is that you are smart and that you look as though you've made some effort and care about getting the job. Quote
perksy Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Suit and some research on 'tinternet about the Company you want to join, Customer base, Number of Employees etc etc They'll like it if you've taken the trouble to do some Homework... Quote
Mark Stanton Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 suited and booted gotta be the way to go mind ................... saying that, last two interviews I've been to I couldn't be 'd to wear a suit ................. I got tipped off that the companies had already done their own pre-interview checks and the view was just to make sure and sort out finances nowadays I just turn up for work in jeans and trainers, unless I'm at a meeting ....................... I'm paid to churn out work ............... not to choke wearing a tie if you want the job get suited tis only way Quote

That's what I was thinking - wearing your new suit for a couple of hours for a interview won't ruin it, will it? Richard. Quote
