raspy Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 does anyone use a choke cable on twin webbers mine has the fascility but no cable just wodering as I get a lot of popping in the exhaust till it gets hot cheers Quote
a4gom Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 When its really cold I use the choke to start but push it back in straight away, it doesn't seem to raise the throttle (revs) in any way unlike my dellorto's did so soon cuts out if I don't keep revving it till it warms up.. Quote
Blatman Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Never used the choke on a set of Webers. Popping from the carbs is a sign of a slightly weak mixture. Unless it's doing it *a lot* then don't worry. Popping out the exhaust is simply unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. Can't really help that much with carbs, unless it's really bad... Quote
Bean Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Had a choke cable on my car when I bought, removed it staright away. Never needed it, all year round. Quote
Jenko Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 A few pump on the loud pedal before start up does the trick...no need for choke..... Quote
langy Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I had a choke cable and never used it, 3 or 4 pumps on the accelerator before you turn the key works every time. Cable has now been removed as a bit of a weight saving measure Quote
Liam Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Cable has now been removed as a bit of a weight saving measure Quote
jos Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 would this be the same for any type of carbs, ie dellortos or bike carbs etc Quote
Boomy Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I removed the choke cable from my car when i got it too because it was never used. A few pumps of the pedal seems to do the trick when it hasn't been started for ages. Twin weber 40's btw. Quote
a4gom Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Like I said I don't use mine very much if ever but it will be staying put , if I take it of i'll have a hole in the dash. Plus it can easily be converted to an emergency get me home accelerator cable if the other two snap Quote
stu999 Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 would this be the same for any type of carbs, ie dellortos or bike carbs etc Some carbs don't work like this - i.e. *most* bike carbs, SU's etc. Weber's/Dellorto's have a jet system which squirts a measured amount of neat fuel into the intakes, very basically to help the carbs 'catch up' if the throttle is slapped open. This is also then often used to give the engine the extra fuel required for starting when cold... Quote
cozzy Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Mine bogs terribly when cold without the choke. Ideally I would warm the car for 5 minutes before setting off but dont think the neighbours would be to pleased Quote
DerekJ Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Hi All, I get my first Westie in a couple of weeks so I was reading up on Webbers and found this document on the 'Web:- "Selection and tuning of Weber DCOE carburettors". You can find the full document if you search for the title. This is the section on cold starting. Hope this helps, Derek >>>>>>>> Starting technique for Weber equipped engines (engine cold) Some Webers have a cold start circuit (choke), others don't, in my experience, it is very easy to flood the engine and wet plugs using the cold start mechanism, as it very crude in operation. The accepted technique for cold starting is as follows:- Allow the float chambers to fill if you have an electric pump, this should take about 5-10 seconds, fully depress the accelerator rapidly four times, then on a light throttle, turn the engine over, if it does not start immediately, repeat the procedure three times. The engine should fire, but may need 'nursing' for a minute or two before it will idle, gentle prodding of the accelerator should keep it alive long enough for it to warm up. If the engine does not fire within three attempts, then try five or six pumps. If this does not work, depress the accelerator fully and hold it open while turning the engine over for 5 to 15 seconds, then close the accelerator and try again. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Quote
