Westy1700 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Completely off westy topic but maybe someone can assist, hopefully... My 'normal' car is Audi A6 2.5 diesel sport quattro, standard 180 brake but with a clever little chip from a well known fellow member now showing a tad more... problem is that its become Very smokey when it pulls hard and labours in a gear, like leave it in sixth and hold the gear it can smoke for england...Its not using oil and still pulling 35mpg consistently...in fact its quite useful when a saxo boy racer gets stuck up your chuff you just smoke them out and they soon pull back... i know some diesels are prone to smoke and have had it checked by the dealer whose gorgeous receptionist said that its emissions were normal... should i be worried or is there something i can get checked out as i am getting a bit conscious about the environment and don't like being told about the cloud i keep trailling behind me.. I guess i should take off the chip and see if that stops it first, but could it be a single injector clogged ? Quote
JeffC Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Now Greg.. prob nowt to worry about, I find with the vag diesels If they are clean out the exhaust they are normally slower than the cars that put a bit of black out , look at tractors when they are grafting up a hill or loaded they all smoke If you havent been thashing the car would be worth giving it a hard thrash to blow the cobwebs out, a lot of diesels tend to go smokey, there is additives to add to the fuel but I find holding it in a gear for a while has the same effect, Have to do me dads car every year for test failing that drop the box off and try that, may just be overfuelling slightly 2 minute job to remove it .. P.s my tintop is like a james bond car under full tilt and has been for the last 18months Quote
samcooke Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 TADTS VAG diesels are notoriously sooty. Even more modern diesels still puff smoke under certain loads / conditions. Start worrying if you lose power, the economy drops or oil consumption goes up significantly. Quote

Kevin Wood Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 A mate of mine has a bog standard A4 TDI and has taken it back to Audi sveral times due to the embarrasing trail of smoke it leaves. They said.... TADTS! Kevin Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 You're not near Hemel Hempstead are you? There was a bit of smoke rising over there a while back. Quote

a4drk Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Hello I used to have an A4 2.5 TDi Quattro Sport 180bhp. I got it chipped to 208bhp by Upsolute. com I wasn't too impressed, so the guy got the techie blokes in Austria to do me a "higher profile" chip. He re-did this for me & warned me that it would smoke a bit more. The new chip took it approx up to about 215bhp.... which made the difference. The car went really well, but from behind it looked liked the Bat Mobile or as if it ran on coal ! Halfrauds sell Wynns stuff to reduce the black smoke. worth a shot.. David Quote
Hammy Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Just a thuoght.... The injectors may need cleaning - when they get a bit dirty the injector spray does not atomise the diesel fully and you get poor combustion and hence smoke. Had the same problem with my van, utrasonically cleaned injectors sorted it and gave better power/ecnonomy (used to smoke heavy at high revs in low gears full throttle ). If the car has done a good mileage ( say 80+k then it might be time) Quote
rogerman Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 try the air filter had the same as you with my audi a6 the chip will not be helping things as well just try it let us no Quote
smithydar Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 just got exactly the same prob with my boss's a4 v6. the turbos been knackered for a long time so finally changed it for a new one.he ran it for a week and still moaned about the smoke.took the turbo off again and the seals were shot.sent it back and a bloke rang.he said the problem was that engine suffers from engine breathers blocking up which will give these symptoms.weve got the turbo back but he said do not start/run it untill the breathers have been done. i dont know if this is right or not but gonna give it a go.the bloke said its a common problem,so worth a look. hth darren Quote
spence Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 This might work for you. The old man has used it in his VW bus (diesel) because of a smoking problem. Will let you know later what he thinks of it. yZ30928QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MOT-emi....iewItem Quote
