FURRY Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Hello everyone, have started to strip down the pre lit i have just brought, I am fast approaching a bare chassis. the problem is that as the car is 19 years old and never seen the road (except from when i saved it from the previous owner and pushed it onto the trailer) the chassis is looking a bit tired, but solid with only minimal surface rust and i was thinking of painting it with por 15 rust preventer, as being a poor student can't afford blasting and powdercoating. can i use por 15 over the old powdercoat or do i have to strip it all off. many thanks Furry Quote
peterg Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 AFAIK you can just paint it on over the powdercoat but it works best if you clear the surface of any visible rust first otherwise it 'could' carry on corroding underneath the PO15 coat - it's unlikely but as you've stripped the chassis down it's the one good chance to do it right Quote
KerryS Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 If it was me doing it, I'd remove powder coating far enough back from the rust to see bare steel and then work from there. Otherwise, as peterg says, corrosion will creep. Kerry Quote
chazpowerslide Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Blasting and powder coating is not as expensive as you may think. I got Mark Jackson's chassis blasted and coated for (IRRC) £100. Most blasters and powder coaters will do a deal for cash, make some calls an shop around. Chaz. Quote
Blatman Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I agree with Chaz. IMHO, trying to save money on chassis prep is a false economy. Besides, if you were a poor student, you wouldn't have bought a Westfield that needed a complete strip and rebuild Quote

Anyway I was wondering why people say that rust carries on corroding underneath, isn't rust the chemical reaction called oxidisation which requires the presence of oxygen, or does POR 15 not completely seal the metal? Bean Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 You should be able to clean the affected area back to good powdercoat, strip all around the rusty area then treat and hammerite. I need to do the chassis rail infront of the driver side, been meaning to since I bought the car. Quote
michaelcoombs Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 if you were a poor student, you wouldn't have bought a Westfield that needed a complete strip and rebuild Pah! I bought mine with my student loan and had to survive on just on beer for the next 3 years... even sold my TV and Video to pay for my Zetec.... I still don’t have a TV 5 years later its all a mater of priorities Quote
Bazzer Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 What have you chaps who have re powder coated done about the holes in the chassis. Does it not fill up with the shot from blasting ? I am looking to re powder coat this winter, so am quite interested. Bazzer Quote
perksy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Have used Por 15 and it's very good PM if you need any advice on using it, it can be very dangerous Needs to go on bare metal though, preferably after using POR 25 Metal ready All depends how bad the current chassis is If you want to do it properly, get it blasted and then re-powdercoated Be wary if they suggest Chemical stripping the chassis, it's better to get it blasted as it provides a better 'key' for the powdercoat to bond to (used to work at a company with powdercoating facilities) HTH Quote
FURRY Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 thanks alot everyone. i think i will have a quick saerch around for cheap powder coating in and around bournemouth/ poole area. if i can't find a good quote will have to stick with por or hammerite although i have heard hammerite peels off of powdercoat, can anyone advise. also what is better, hammerite or por15. perksy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Por 15 Hammerite has a tendency to chip, Por 15 Doesn't Be aware though that it's UV sensitive so if it's going to be 'visible' it will require top-coating with Hammerite or similar HTH Quote
stu999 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Hammerite = ****e (IMHO). Get a tin or two of 'Plastikote' aerosol from B&Q, or better still, some 'Hard Hat' (wont get this at B&Q though). Sadly quite difficult to source but amazing stuff, and looks like powdercoat when dry too POR15 underneath first though Quote
Robandcolin Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Ferndown powder coat Did my wishbones. And I think they have done a few other peoples stuff too check they have a big enough oven though. They did all four wishbones and rear trailing arms for £20 shot blasted and coated. PM me I can come and have a look tonight and advise you if you like. Rob Quote
