JeffC Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 QUOTE Tight A*** Ther's no award for being the richest in the grave yard I wish no money in car sales anymore rr sport imho is going down in the world.. not in the same street as an X5. 535d has just gone now on route to Birmingham take a bit of advice tell yer bro to save a few quid and buy a 530d Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Trouble is we've had a chipped 535d and the 530d is'nt in the same league it's not even the same sport Who said that? Quote
JeffC Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 I must be getting old to choose me se over the sport, but honestly prefered it.. used them both for a week now and the sport on a run the ride is harsh, the runflats dont do it any favours either .. biggest killer 4 me on the 535d is the mpg is a good 10mpg down on the 530d even on a run .. and Im not into the auto box either , to me doesnt take advantage of the torque changing down all the time up to 100mph the 530d is nearly as quick which I think is down to the gearbox , after 100 the twin turbo is mental interestingly when both cars were standard there was less between the 2cars .. the 535d responded very well to being remapped could have made a cracking car out of the 2 though Quote
JeffC Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 Barry you have a lot to answer for plant the seed and all that slept on the thought of this bose sound and decided to see if I can find a local place and pop along for a listen see what yer gets for yer money , If Its as good as you say it is I will have to invest invest the power of suggestion " target="_blank">is there anything here worth a punt?? Quote
moomin Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 QUOTE decided to see if I can find a local place and pop along for a listen always a good idea, as it may not be to your ear. plus you wouldn't spend that much on anything else without trying it for size first would you? for the size, they produce an amazing sound, though ultimately you could argue they will never produce as good a sound as a "proper" speaker. and it's not just about shaking the sofa... heathen... moomin Quote
MAT1800 Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 IMO Get your self a copy of What-Hifi Sound and Vision, or What Home cinema, Or Home Cinema Choice etc etc... ( or look here, ideal to search for any problems others have experienced with particular models once you've narrowed down your choice. ) That should give you an idea of prices, and whats being recomended at the moment with in your budget. Also the balance of components abilities.. ie. do you want this for only movies, (you have a dedicated music system) or 60:40 movies:music or 50:50 etc. As plenty of amps, DVD players and speaker are better sutied to one rather than the other, some are of course equal at both. Then if you can you'll be best to go and audition some kit at a local shop, try pricerunner.com or similar to hunt down the best prices once you know what your after. Although 'real' shops might let you take items home to try out before you agree definately to buy. Click here for all your cables. I'd go for seperates all the time, rather than an all in one system, not only do they usually sound better you can then upgrade / change individual parts rather than the whole kit. And IMHO if you've just spent £1,000's on a 5000" flat screen that fills an entire wall, don't skimp on your DVD player I'd spend at least a 1/4 of what you spent on a screen on a player, and at least that again on an amp. You won't get anything less than 7.1 on an amp, (I expect) although of course you don't have to have 8 speakers, you can just use it in 5.1 format.. and upgrade later Look out for the newer amps, such as the Denon AVR-2807 which have HDMI switching allowing you to replace all the various cables to your screen with a ssingle cable. By plugging all your sources into the amp, then a single HDMI lead from your amp to the screen, ideal if it's wall mounted for example. Quote
lukeyboy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I had the same dilema when I upgraded my system. I have a friend who has 2 bose systems and they do sound good and blend nicely into the surroundings. I nearly went for the bose, but in the end, most reviews / mags suggested that a larger sized speaker gave a better sound and I had enough room to fit them in (just). I bought a Yamaha 7.1 sound / vision processor and amp (which I run at 5.1 due to lack of rear / side speaker space, just missed out on the HDMI connector but does run RGB, S-vid and component) and run it through Maudant Short speakers (not the most expensive but had decent reviews at the time) and van damme cable (not the kickboxer). This was done on a budget and I was happy with the outcome. The yam amp even came with a mic that you placed in the position of the listener and it would outomatically set up the sound fields, phase, level etc to the optimum The processor runs dvd, cd player, minidisc, VCR, playstation and laptop for a music jukebox, then you just run one cable from the unit to the plasma. Cost was about £1100 for amp and speakers and £250 on cables and interconnects. Quote
JeffC Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 called into a place today to listen to the bose set up, turned out they stopped selling it ? anyway guy in there tried to sell me a arcam diva? (anyone heard of it ) set up, sounded very good and yes its streets ahead of what Ive got but not £3500 better Barry sending you a pm. Quote
Boomy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Did much the same as lukeboy here. I have some smaller KEFs, some mordaunts and some mission rears etc. Got a couple of Yamaha amps and ended up with a subwoofer that is about the same size as a mini, plus spent a few quid on cable. That was what i was going to use when i got my projector and screen. At the moment though both the amps, all the speakers, the projector+ smaller screen and some smaller woofers are all in my PC room. The monster woofer is under a cover in what was supposed to be a small cinema room. It's a junk room now though and houses a parrot and a chinchilla. It started off well though, this was approx a month after moving in and knocking a wall down. We didn't decorate etc (hence the wallpaper and temp curtains), i just wanted the screen up asap to try out the movie experience and enjoy some new chairs i got That's only a 10" sub in the pic btw, i didn't have the bigger one then. Quote
lukeyboy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Impressive equipment boomy! Allow me to show you my smaller one! Bit if a tight squeeze compared to your tv room. Quote
Boomy Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Nice setup matey!. One day i will get around to such neatness :-) Actually that room in my pic is now a fully decorated dining room and the idea was to do the same thing in the room above that as it's the same size. It's the room above though that sadly looks like a bomb site now :/ In fact we have done zero decorating in three years upstairs in the house lol. It's all old curtains, naff paper and flowery carpets . I also never got round to getting a nice flat TV, i'm still using a pixel plus philips CRT thing.I did try going the TFT route for the PC though but went back to a CRT. That will probably change though later seeing as the TFT's have come a long way now. All my gear is squashed into my computer room now, the TV, PC, amps, woofers, screen, 2 chairs, consoles and various speakers. In fact there are around 16 speakers in here with me lol. TV, projector screen, amp and other speakers are off to the left, chairs and projector just on the right, arcade cabinet and piles of DVD's behind. The joy of not having kids Quote
