"Television star Steve Irwin, known as the ``Crocodile Hunter,'' died after a stingray's barb pierced his chest during the filming of a documentary, police said.

The 44-year-old collapsed after being stung by the stingray at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, a popular tourist resort, at 11 a.m. today, the Queensland Police Service said in the e-mailed statement. "

I guess he messed with nature one too many times.

Yep just heard that meself, sad really but like you say he messed with nature quite a lot and when nature bites back it's usually serious  :(

I went to Port Douglas a few years back and did a bit of diving there, you have to show respect for the locals when your in their environment.

Was fortunate enough to visit Beerwah, Australia Zoo last year .................. superb place and what the Irwin's have done for education and conservation is superb ................... they have also purchased thousands of acres of bush and forest to be retained as natural habitat throughout Oz ................ guy sure was a character and grabbed everyones attention.

Very sad loss    :(

I couldn't believe it when I read this and had to check teletext to make sure.

I'm so sad, what a great loss. The guy did so much for conservation and was such a character on our screens.

I too wanted to go to Aus Zoo to meet the legend, now it'll have to be to pay my respects.

I have just sent a message to Terri, the children and staff at Aus Zoo via Steve's myspace website, giving our condolences to them all.

The legend will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

RIP Steve, you were a Bonza guy and changed many peoples perspective on animal conservation.

Very sad, he was a real character - even the Australian PM has done a national broadcast about his loss.
