steppenwolf Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 My system runs W XP with SP 2 I have recently started getting 'Java Update' reminders apparently being generated by J25E Runtime Environment 5.0 What is this? Do I need it (I don't use the computer for any games)? It is a Virus/Trojan? Can I delete the program? Thanks for any advice! Quote
Blatman Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 You'll need Java. Lots of web sites use Java for pictures and moving images on their sites. Not sure what the specific problem is, but the Java stuff can be found in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab. Scroll to Microsoft VM and view the Java settings. Here at work only the JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine option is ticked. I'm sure the Microsoft Knowledge base will have something interesting to read Quote
worldwidewebs Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 Programs that require Java need the J2RE. However, unless you are experiencing a problem with one of these programs you don't need to update. Updating to the new version (usually) doesn't cause any problems and is often a good idea. It's definately not a virus though! Quote
