Drax power station

If it's the CO2 they're worried about surely there 'ain't really a solution other than to turn the lights out or go Nuclear. These people are a bit too simplistic to realise that we need a solution, rather than a bunch of whingers, though.

.. and this plant might be the "single biggest emitter of CO2" but it's also the single biggest generator of leccy! Economies of scale probably mean that, as coal fired stations go, it's one of the more efficient. If they close it what'll happen? We'll just stoke up the smaller, less efficient ones. More CO2.

It's a bit like saying we need to ban 747s because they're more polluting than a 2 seater Cessna.

I agree. Dump 'em with the waste.

Never thought I'd say it but Arthur Scargill was indeed a visonary.

Should never have shut all of those pits.....

I live close to a power station which has a pit next to it with plenty of coal available. Pits shut and the coal comes in from Poland.

747 when a full load gets something like 80mpg/person not bad for the speed it's doing

Exactly my point. When you look at the whole picture it isn't bad at all.

He wasn't a visonary, if he was he would have seen the foolishness of trying to take on a goverment. The reasons for the situation at the moment is the typical shortsightedness of successive goverments. When North sea oil was there instead of using it wisely we took a quick profit and wasted the money, the pits looked expensive to keep open (and coming from south Yorkshire) they never factored in the cost to the community for generations to come or the cost of me loosing my job when the pits closed. Coal was cheap to import, gas was cheaper still and we had our own oil. Now we have little oil, little gas and what oil there is we can buy is controlled by the Russian Mafia, or the madmen in the middle east.

If Scargill had stuck to looking after his men and not tried to bring down the Thatcher goverment there would be pits still in operation. But even him in his most desperate bouts of madness could not compare with the lunatics protesting here. Perhaps if we get their home addresses we can cut the electric to there homes and then see what the reality would be for us if they get their way.

The loss of Drax at a moments notice would pull the grid down so you would all be in the dark

Unlikely. My power comes from France, as does a fair amount of the South Easts power. 7% loss is not enough to throw the entire country in to darkness as the remaing stations have enough spare capacity... just...

Don't believe protester propaganda. As Jeff and Neil say, they really don't operate in the real world.

It was said best by an American senator last week on the reasons why his state (I forget which one) is mining it's a** off. He said:

"Unless you're living in the jungle naked and eating the plants, then you are part of the energy problem, no matter how much you protest."

It's a fair observation...

Tuesday at 11:38 the grid lost Longanett (2,304 megawatts) and 1196 MW. Sizewell B (1196 MW.) Power stations Thats less than Drax's output

I was in the control room at work and the operators thought the frequency trend was a false alarm at first as it dropped like a stone, we could do nothing to help as we where running flat out but the good news for us was the price of eletricity went up 5 times that it was half an hour before

Just shows how little spare there is in the system
