Ketan Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Do aeroscreens make a lot of difference compared to normal windscreens? And which would you prefer? Quote
adamnreeves Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Difference to what? Air resistance? Wind noise? .. Quote
Ketan Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 well yh... what are the pro and cons to each? i tried searchin over internet and on the forum, couldnt find anything. Just looking into it at the moment Quote
Crash Override Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 People say that there's a 10mph difference in top end speed in favour of aeroscreen. Malc. Quote
minisweeper Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 It's very windy out there with an aeroscreen on. Personally i think it looks nicer though. And if you're building one it saves you the effort of wipers/washers/demisters/whatever involved with putting a full windscreen on. It does prevent you from having the full hood though. So there are a few points. Performance wise I'm not sure. I've had 95 up a reasonable hill in my 1600 xflow and it didnt seem like it was about to give up (no idea what the top speed is meant to be or how much different it is with a windscreen though), and since that was 1.5x the speed limit anyway it's plenty for me. Depends what you're using your car for? Quote
adamnreeves Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 well yh... what are the pro and cons to each? i tried searchin over internet and on the forum, couldnt find anything. Just looking into it at the moment I haven't had either as I am still building my car but I understand that pros and cons are: Windscreen offers more air resistance and affects top speed. Windscreen resistance also affects the mid range acceleration. Windscreen and its ancilliaries, i.e. wipers, demisters provide extra opportunties to fail the SVA. Windscreen offers more protection, no need to ware a helmet or goggles. Aeroscreen is simplier to install and offers less opportunity for an SVA failure Aeroscreen is more aerodynamic Aeroscreen offers minimal protection, wear a helmet. More wind noise in the car. As others as said it depends what you want to use the car for, if road then windscreen more desirable, if track then aeroscreen. I am building a road going car, at the moment I have decided to go the aeroscreen route as I shall be using my car for blats and fun and occasinal track day. If I were using the car for touring and longer runs then I would install a windscreen, which I may do, but then I do not have to worry about the SVA. I am sure others will be along, if you do a search on the forum you may find some debates on this subject also. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Much less turbulance in the cockpit with an aeroscreen; most windcreeners seem to struggle without sidescreens at any sort of speed. (I'd actually argue, that cause the airflow feels a bit more stable, it feels a bit less windy!) Quote
cidersurfer Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Windscreen is also quite heavy. Glass is roughly the equivalent density of concrete, so it's a lot of extra weight over the aero, which affects acceleration, and also that weight is high up on the car so it affects handling characteristics too. BTW I have a windscreen. I had my first run in an aero screen car last week and TBH it didn't feel anymore uncomfortable than a screen at speed. You do get a lot of buffeting with a screen at speed. I was quite surprised how civilised the aero car was. Quote
Ketan Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 Thanks for the replies guys, was very helpful. The car is basically just going to be a mess around for summer! So down country lanes etc... Looks like i will get me an aeroscreen! Ebay here i come! Quote
adhawkins Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Another plus point for an aeroscreen is that if you're driving in the wet, you don't have the additional two layers of water to look through. Andy Quote
Bean Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Look cool, drive faster and save weight. Fit an aeroscreen Quote
dibbly Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I'm currently building a car with the intention of using an aeroscreen. However, I was passenger in a car fitted with one the other day, and couldn't see over the top and looking through it, the road looks a bit distorted to say the least! I'm now having second thoughts, as to make it work, I'd have to set my seat quite high, giving other issues. ....this of course has alot to do with me being a short-a**e but its worth considering if you too are vertically challenged! Martin Keene Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Dibby, the final position of the screen has some adjustment in it so you could position it lower if you wanted. Quote
bultacobarry Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Another vote for Aeroscreen Main reason is vision if your are wearing a helmet/visor for track days and competition when its raining. The windblast of your visor keeps it clear with an aeroscreen. With the windscreen, visibility through your visor and the windscreen can become poor. Barry Quote
