I use a sat nav with built in camera database, which can be updated from the net.

Works quite well but never feel as tho I could trust it 100% and obviously doesn't pick up mobile van, plod in bushes etc.

But I always drive within the speed limit anyway......

Paul,

I use a MicroFuzion (http://www.microfuzion.co.uk/) GPS camera detector. It costs from £99 to £129 and there is no subscription for updates. It works very well and I can hear the voice from the unit in my Elise and just about in the Westy.

If you have an up-to-date HP PDA you can connect it to give you Sat Nav using something like the Tom Tom PDA software.

The only slight downside is that the LED display can be difficult to read when it's fixed to the windscreen in very bright sunlight.

Personally, in the UK I prefer a map when navigating so this was an ideal and  cost effective solution for me. It's also very small (about the size of a tin of Altoids) so fits in your pocket when removed from the car.

I use a Road Angel Classic, which is not availabe anymore, but my Dad has just bought the Road Angel Compact. Which is very impressive, nice and small, does all the cameras and it displays the limit for he road you are on when it picks up a camera. Bargin at £199.

You can now get a TTOne for that price....download speed camera database from www.pocketgpsworld.com for £2 and then you will have full sat nav as well...

Cheapest TT One I've seen so far is £214.99 at PC World or The Link  :p  plus the downloadable speed camera databases are not as up to date or as accurate as the likes of Road Angel as they are AFAIK wholly built using data that customers upload whereas RA have a complete database which is then added to by customers if temp ones/new ones appear before their database has been updated   :t-up:

I'd vote for the RA Compact, very configurable for distance/volume etc and telling you what the speed limit for the road that the approaching camera is on has been very useful  ???  :D  we use one in addition to satnav  ;)

Hi Pete

The Link have for £214.99 as you say, but you can knock anoter £15 off with a discount code (can try and find it if someone wants..)

Re database...well, possibly....but then the Pocket GPS one has been going for sometime now....I guess unless someone makes a straight comparison and/or counts the number of sites listed we'll never know......user updates should be at least as good.

As far as the "configurability" you mention.....you can do all that with TTOne  :p

Paul,

You could try the Microfuzion laser detector with voice at £55 (http://www.microfuzion.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=FZLZ3&cat=8). However, as others have said, it'll probably be too late once you detect the camera. Most GPS systems have a warning on known / possible mobile sites. Obviously wont get them all.

The Snooper S6-R Neo comes complete with a radar/laser detector (RLD) which can be mounted on the dashboard or the inside of the windscreen. The RLD unit is also waterproof and comes with an under-bonnet mounting kit so that it can be positioned within the engine compartment behind the vehicles grille for a professional installation. The Snooper S6's RLD unit detects all types of radar and laser speed monitoring systems often used in danger spots where 'Fixed' systems cannot be easily utilised, thus ensuring that you will be made alert to almost every accident hotspot and speed monitoring system whether fixed or mobile. Detection of radar and laser is also selectable so that the device can be programmed to detect radar and laser, laser only, or can be switched off in low risk or high false alert areas.

£249.99 here.

IIRC the non plus version see here is the same but without blue scren. Snooper S6-R Neo = Snooper S6-R Neo Plus but without the blue screen (and is £50 cheaper.)

Comparision of many scamerra detectors. - under "S6 Neo / S6-R Neo" the white blob is the difference between the R & the non-R (mobile Radar detection.)

I have an Origin B2 with full radar and laser capability (I don't have the laser jammer installed if your watching Mr P). Been very impressed with it, lots of functionality and you can put themain unit anywhere in the car as the bits with the sensors are located elsewhere and I don't have a ruddy great lump of plastic hanging off my windscreen or sat on the top of the dashboard for tea leafs to take.  :t-up:

Iv'e had a S6 Neo R for about 2 years (and a S 801 before it).

They both work very well, especially the S^ as it picks up everything, although the S6 is a bit cumbersome as the radar and GPS units are separate, but that could be a bonus in some applications.

I have them either end of the dash top in my tintop with the connecting wire pushed behind the lower screen rail. Methinks that  when certain legislation is passed it might have to go elsewhere.  ;)

Putting the radar unit and gps detector inside  can be a problem with some types of car dependant on the type of window glass used. My Audi blocked the GPS signal and interferred with the radar signal but it works fine in the BMW. The lazer alert wakes you up but the only trouble is, if it picks it up it's already got you in it's sights apparently. :(

You can add a laser detection device to the RA Compact for £50, but as has been said already, they are of limited benefit.

I have one fitted to my RA Classic, and in the year I have had it I have only come across one copper with a hair dryer and no vans. He aimed the hair dryer at me, can't be sure he fired it, but I'd be surpirsed if he was just aiming it for the sake of it, and at 200-300 metres my didn't even flinch... fat lot of use that is then!

Liam, My son's looking for a GPS nav/camera warning and he has an Audi (TT) what was it about yours that blocked the signals?
