timandchris Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Just about to drill through the dashboard into the scuttle for the mounting nuts, a bit worried that we will tear the imitation leather stuff that a westfield dash comes supplied with - any tricks gratefully received Quote
steppenwolf Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Drill a small pilot hole first before drilling the full hole and use a hand drill to give you instant control. Ironically, it is not the vinyl that can cause problems but the foam underneath getting caught and 'bunching up'. Quote
Toby Mack Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 If it is an ally dash with leatherette covering then I found a wood drill did the job fine (the flat type). Not sure how small they go though. Oh, mine isn't foam filled. Not sure how that would react. Quote
NRW Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Hi check that there aren't holes already drilled hidden under leatherette covering Quote
Crash Override Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Hi check that there aren't holes already drilled hidden under leatherette covering Mine was like this, so a good idea to probe from the back round the edge to see if there are. Malc. Quote
Stevo Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 I used a soldering iron to melt a hole in the leatherette, steady hand is required though! Quote
timandchris Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Thanks all, slow hand drilling seemed to work fine... Here is Chris putting one of the bolts in... Quote
NRW Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 looks cool. I used rivnuts to secure the dash as it has had to come off so many times!! Have you mounted the wiper motor yet? The manual says on the left hand side but the loom is wired for it to be fitted on the right. I would have mounted it on the right as it would have saved a lot of agro! suggest you check with westfield 1st. Read your blog and yep I cracked my tub in the same place!!! on both sides. Still not sorted it yet but drilled two tiny holes at end of crack to stop any more probs Quote
Hammy Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Pick looks cool BTW - You sure those toggles pass SVA ? Quote
Peter M Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 BTW - You sure those toggles pass SVA ? Area behind steering wheel and 127mm frm outer part of steering wheel is exempt for SVA. Quote
minisweeper Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Even if they pass sva the indicator one needs rotating 90 degrees That's a pretty smart dashboard though! Quote
Toby Mack Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Even if they pass sva the indicator one needs rotating 90 degrees That's a pretty smart dashboard though! why? Mine is 90deg to that but I have often thought it would be better verticle like this one. Operation would then be more like a stalk indicator - ie up for left and down for right. Quote

Yep mines like that, works better as it feels more natural if your used to stalk indicators Darren Quote
Tony Hughes Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Mine's just passed SVA with these toggles. I fixed my dash with black self tappers into little plastic trim fixing thingies which push into 6mm square holes - don't know what the official name for them is. Use any fixing that doesn't require access from the back! Doesn't matter which way you mount the indicator toggle - you will still forget to turn them off after years of self-cancelling ones ...
