goofballs Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 I have had a secondhand megablade for about 500miles. Yesterday, it developed a knocking noise around the rear diff area. The knocking noise only occurs when you are in gear and accelerating at normal traffic speeds. When you are coasting, with the clutch down it dissapears. The knocking noise is a decent sized thud that can be felt through the roll cage. Removed the rear cover to see if it was anything visible, but it doesn't look like anything obvious. Any suggestions on what it could be ? Any suggestions on what approach I could take to diagnose it ? Anyone in the North Manchester area who could help ?.......err....only joking, good advice will be sufficient. cheers Quote
adhawkins Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Check all the brackets of the diff are still welded to the chassis. Someone at MTN had noticed a new noise from the rear on his way down, and it turned out that one of the lower brackets was no longer welded to the chassis. Andy Quote
deano.1 Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 The way i diagnosed mine yesterday was to have one person in the car, engine running with one foot on brake pedal, then let the clutch pedal out to take up the bite, i could then see the broken bush carrier moving away from the chassis Quote
Blatman Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Duff rose joint? Duff CV/UJ? Duff wheel bearing? Reverse box? Duff prop joint? There are lots of things that can make a clonking noise, and we aren't going to be able to point to it with any degree of accuracy. It's time to jack it up and get busy with a pry bar... Quote
wacomuk Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 i had a noise near the diff that sounded bad! it turned out to be the handbrake cable catching the prop shaft Quote
felters Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 it doesn't have a reverse box... Like wot the rest said plus I'd also check the prop and bearing carrier near the middle UJ. Fingers crossed. Quote
goofballs Posted July 17, 2006 Author Posted July 17, 2006 Thanks guys, I will get busy and do some of the things mentioned. Anyone got a diagram of the parts in a skeleton form, or, can point me in the direction of one ? If I don't get anywhere, can anyone recommend someone who could take a look at it, in the Manchester region ?....a company with experience in Westfields. cheers, Quote
goofballs Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 very busy at work at the moment, so haven't managed to do some diagnosis. Being it is peak summer I thought I would take it to someone else to fix it ASAP, and get it on the road again. I am taking it to Rick Wood in Stockport on Friday. Is he a good mechanic....anybody had experience of his workmanship. cheers Quote
MAT1800 Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Goofball, I took my westi to Ric's to sort out the mapping and get the suspension set up, both times I was pleased with the results. I know other members have also been there and have been more than happy with the service. Another point worth checking is that I have a couple of bolts (in total, six on each side of both axels I think) that hold the UJ's against the diff / hub that are are pain in the and unlike most of the bolts refuse to stay tight, despite several attempts with thread lock etc... When they work loose I get a tell tale tappping from the diff, which f course comes and goes with speed etc. might be worth checking that all those bolts are tight? Mat. Quote
goofballs Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Thanks for all your help guys, well.........as I was going to Rick's the problem dissapeared completely. I went to see his workshop anyway. Very friendly guy, had a good chat about a number of things. Will be taking it to him if I have any problems, or need suspension changes. Well there you go, felters sold me a self repairing car....worth every penny. cheers Quote
