RV8 3.9 EFI

Engine is a 36D 1989 with 128,000 miles. Started to strip down. Yep. I looked through the oil filler before I bought, looked fine. Now oil is removed you can see a layer (about 1.5mm) of old oil coating all the surfaces which is easy to scrap off. I would have thought this is normal, especially if not been flushed at oil changes. I can see the cam is worn but I was intended on changing the cam, followers, buckets, rockers, etc. I am also thinking of changing cam to the longer stroke used in the 4.2.

Take a look at this site

V8 engine

Yep, Cheers Peter, been there before I bought the engine. I was intending on rebuilding the engine anyway of course. I was wondering if this was a typical condition of a 1989 engine with 128K miles on the clock.  This engine was quite cheap and even if the only salvagable part is the block then I still got a bargin and am happy, especially as it is pre 93 and thus makes the emission levels a breeze! (sorry about the pun)

unfortuantly this is common on all v8's i've worked on. Nitromores(spelling?) paint stripper is excellent for removing the black gunk found in these engines.

I thought it might be, but this is the first V8 I have seen from the inside. Thanks for the tip. Once I have this engine running I shall change the oil every 3,000 miles and use flushing oil on a regular basis. I suspect it is going to be a while before I get the opportunity to put oil back into this engine. I see phoenixies(?) flying ahead!

Back many years when rallying V8 TR8 bought a 100,000 mile SD1 engine to replace tired one could not believe the black gunge every where many hours of cleaning ,cam/followers,bearings rings etc changed as part of rebuild had no problems with engine. Do miss the rumble of the V8.

Two main reasons for going the V8 route;

1) The rumble and 2) The torque. Nothing else matters in my single minded task!

As far as cleaning goes, a friend of my son works for a car restoration company and they have a parts washer. I do not know what type, but they use it to clean up old porshe engines!

IMHO - DO change the oil regularly.

DONT get flushing oil anywhere near it!

Sadly, it is impossible to fully remove the flushing oil, which then starts diluting your fresh new oil...

Yep the 'VALLEY' does get quite bad and as everyone suggests it gets crappy. Its worth cleaning, smoothing out and polishing the valley this aids recoevery back to the sump

I use the following

V8 forum

V8 Forum 2

this seems the best

V8 forum best

I use

V8 Developments

I did use John Eales but got sick to death of never having my calls returned and his lack of customer facing stills and the fact that he never had a phone in the workshop.

I don't use RPi its just a personal thing. I just get the impression their just palying at it for a laugh

Have you been on the SEiGHT forunm yet..?I think you have or is that someone else if not let me know and I will email you the forum address

good luck with the re-build keep us up todate. there a dead easy engine to look after and maintain

Thanks for the V8 forums I did not have them all. Yep I intend on polishing the valley and also drilling two holes on the front to aid oil return/flow.

I had suspecions that flushing oil would have that effect. I guess regular oil changes wil remove the need for it. With modern oil adatives probably removes the need anyway I guess.

Yup. Or if you feel things are getting dirty inside, even with regualar changes of lube, running a quality diesel oil in for a few hundred miles is a better option -as diesel oil tends to have greater detergent properties in it :t-up:

note quite sure what the serpertine looks like actually but I thought that was post 94 so my block being 89 probably not. I shall know for certain when I start dismanteling this area. If it is not then I am at this point intending on changing to serpertine. I have the P5/P6 water pump so far!

This has a viscous fan, not sure if the serp units have those?

I'll take a picture of the front tonight.

It's not a serpentine as that was 93 on I think so it will be like mine with single v belt. Barry Ashcroft converted his pre serpentine to serpentine by putting a hat on the end of the cam shaft as the lengths are different pre serp to serp.

By the way Adam you won't be able to use a P6 Alternator bracket as it won't fit as it hits the chassis rail. You can use the Westfield one or possibly the one Barry got himself. I have the Westfield bracket which is a bit agricultural :0  :0
