gee_fin Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Awesome piece of kit. Fell in love with them on plane journeys and if you install Colin McRae your son will never get it back Grand Theft Auto was good, Tiger Woods, everyone's waiting for pocket Gran Turismo, Star Wars, Wipeout, etc. etc. Excellent, excellent little machine. Nerd tangent- Basically, there is a war going on with the PSP hackers and Sony. Hackers doing the usual of cracking the OS and then putting all games up on the torrents for downloads. Last time I checked (been a while tho) if your PSP was of the older OS (v2 or so) you could downgrade it, then use all the free homemade software (and subsequently 'copied' games). Sony keep adding nicer and nicer stuff into their OS releases to try (video players, instant messengers, browsers, etc) and tempt people to upgrade past v2.0 (past which you can't re-downgrade). I found it a useful mechanism to try games before buying them, memory cards are small (1-2Gb about the biggest you can go with reasonable speed) meaning you can't fit many on there and with games on eBay for £20-30 it was easier to just try the game and if any good go and buy it. Anyways, I digress, in summary, buy one for your son and one for you. Then you can wireless each other at Colin McRae Quote
MAT1800 Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Yep Great bit of kit, ideal for travelling or lounging by the pool. Burn your DVD's onto the memory card, play games, surf the net if there's a wireless point nearby, play MP3's... Get a decent memory card for it, I'd suggest at least 1GB, which depending on the angle of the dangle of course, you can save a couple of DVD's and a few albums... Sony have just released a new bit of kit, I've been looking at Here which onced connected to your sky / cable box and PC at home, (with Broadband) allows you to record live TV then stream your favourite TV programs direct to your PSP anywhere in the world.. Or watch movies on your PC hard disc... LocationFree Watch at homeYou now have the freedom to watch live and recorded TV or DVDs remotely wherever and whenever you want in your home, even in the garden.Connect the LocationFree Base Station to your DVD/HDD recorder, Set-Top Box or DVD player and it will transmit your TV programmes or video content through your wireless connection so you can watch via your notebook, PC or Playstation Portable from around your house. Watch on the goWherever you go, even if it’s a different country, LocationFree lets you record, play and replay your favourite video from your home via your laptop or PSP ™. You simply use the internet or wireless LAN to remotely access and control the Base Station from anywhere in the world. It’s as simple as flicking through channels in your own living room Games I'd recommend - SSX On Tour, ideal game for the odd couple of minutes, when you can. Or Splinter Cell Essentials, bit more invloving, but if you have the time, another great game. Not got it yet, but Micromachines V4, is also on the shopping list. Quote
DavidR Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 My lad bought one and loves it but comments that the max volume is very quiet when used as an MP3 player. Seems Sony have implemented a volume limiter to suit the US market. David Quote
MAT1800 Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 That is true actually, the volume can be a bit quiet... Although I've yet to try a new set of headphones, perhaps some noise reducing ones would be best? Although sound through the 2.1 speakers is good. PS. I'd get the 'value' pack then just get what you need. Quote
nlash Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Love mine, bought it in Spain and got a very good price, approx £50 cheaper than uk prices, although I wished i'd asked the Spanish sales assistant to switch it to 'English' language before leaving the shop. Switched it on in the airport on the way back to the uk, ah, not good, everything in foreign lingo. Managed to correct it by trial and error and good guess work. Bought a few games including GTA. Great bit of kit. Good for showing photos to clients too and lighter than the laptop. Quote
a4gom Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 and tempt people to upgrade past v2.0 (past which you can't re-downgrade). I have just been discussing this this morning with my nephew and will confirm this in about an hour but I am reliably told there is a way to do them all now, mines v2.6 at the moment. I'll be back gotta say they are excellent, i play music on mine both with and without headphones no probs, the films are spot on and you can rip your dvd's to your memory cards. biggest pain is the price of the memory cards, they have come down but no where near the drop SD cards have had. reaper Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 QUOTE but I am reliably told there is a way to do them all now i hope there is. got mine a few weeks ago and totally love it Quote
a4gom Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Ok boys I'm back to v1.5 from v2.6 and playing need for speed underground at the mo from my memory card. I've got that and virtual tennins or something like that on my 1gb stick but its nearly full. Nephew is working on the next stage at the moment to load on an emulator which brings you back to v2.5 without upgrading. There is no internet explorer on v1.5 and quite a lot of newer games won't play e.g. colin mcrae 4 and GTA. Hopefully by tonight we should be up and running. Just need a cheap supply of memory sticks now Quote
ljsanders Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 You can get a 2gig memory stick duo pro on ebay for 35 quid inc. postage. Far far cheaper than anywhere else on the internet and most shops who charge more than this for a 1gig. I've got: GTA Burnout Legends (awesome game!) Namco Museum Collectoin Capcom Classics Midway arcade treasures (Rolling Thunder is cool!) Twisted Metal SSX (snowboarding) F1 Grand Prix Daxter All are very good, although F1 GP is a bit too arcade-y for me. Dont bother buying UMD films. Just as pricey as DVD's. Buy DVD's then convert them, that way you can still watch them on TV and you can convert Region 1's DVD's anyway (I think!). Don't be afraid of buying foreign games from abroad for use on a UK PSP. Games are region free despite the region logo on the back. Some games are getting released in Japan/US months before the UK (Capcom classics is an example). Mine isthe US version and it works just fine. Its the UMD films that are region protected. Lee Quote
neilb Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Can't get the consoles but I can get most of the addons... Quote
Muttley Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 As others have said, stonking bit of kit, use mine nearly every day. Extras I've bought are (all from ebay): - 2Gb Memory Stick Duo Pro for £30, although there were buy-it-nows at £35 anyway. - desk stand/charging cradle - only £3, the charger plugs into it and then you just drop the PSP on when you want to charge it up, also doubles as a stand for watching videos. - 3800mAh battery pack which clips onto the back. Trebles the battery capacity and charges off the standard charger. Bought it for long flights. £6. - Semi-hard case £5, fits PSP and a few games/mem cards, so I can just chuck it in my hand luggage. Muttley. Quote
