I found out last week somebody had obtained my credit card number and personal information. They managed to change the registered address and contact numbers through my credit card company  :0

I first notice a couple of transctions totaly around £1000, rang up immediately to dispute and cancel the card. A new one was dispatched but to the fraudster, since he'd changed my registered address.

A follow up call yesterday and the matter is now in hand, contact details updated, disputed three transactions to the sum of nearly £3000  :0

The credit card company suspect my details were obtained through Ebay, cracked a weak security question after looking up my mothers maiden name.

The account is now frozen, I don't have to make any payment for legitimate of fraudulent items.

I should be receiving paperwork regarding the fraud in the coming weeks, along with details of a register for identity theft victims.

In the meantime I have been changing passwords and security question for all online accounts.

Scary stuff.

Scary ? yes . I find it very easy to get credit card nuerosis . I make a concious effort to destroy anything I descard / bin which might have me personal details there .

Recent developments , scams , etc. has ruined my confidence in on line sales , in spite of the banks telling us its all fine and dandy.

Hope you get it sorted  :)

I burn all financial records, have never thrown anything away for personal details.

I am surprised and disappointed somebody managed to get my details so easily, and then change contact details through the bank  :bangshead:

Still, you live and learn.

I'm keen to hear from others that have suffered the same problem, especially if they have advice.

One of my Ebay accounts has been broken in to this morning. They didn't change the password though, so I have. I've also changed the registered address from what was there, to the Met Police, Fraud Office, New Scotland Yard...

The were using a stolen credit card and buying/selling things on one day auctions/buy it nows, and buying and selling it to themselves, as far as I can tell, and it all seemed to be happening from China.

Anyhow, password has been changed, secret question has been changed, addresses have been changed, and Ebay and my credit card co have been informed. Same goes for my other Ebay account.

I've had 34 emails this morning, with 10 positive feedbacks since 08.30. I'm a velly good Eblayer, appallentry...

Blimey!  :0

Make sure the contact details for your credit card are haven't been changed, keep a look for odd items appearing on your next statement.

Bean this happened to me in April - thread here

Was told it is almost always a randon event and when they get picked up they move on + chances are your card details were compromised at a retailer.

Have a look at the Cifas Protective registration Scheme here.  For £11.75 they will make sure every change to your financial bits is examined with a fine toothcomb for a year and call you if there's anything hooky.  I registered on here and not caused me any problems so far - worth doing IMHO.

PM me if you want to know any more (although I don't have much more to tell).

Saw a program on id theft a while back.

Made me paranoid enough to go and buy a paper shredder.

Anything with ANY account number now goes through the shredder and into the compost bin.
