SimonT Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 I'm in the US at the moment and the rental car I got this time is a Cadillac Escalade - a real pimp mobile. It's got a 403-hp 6.2L Vortec V8 VVT engine apparently and does an impressive 14 (US) MPG! So, it got me thinking whilst sitting in a lab waiting for things to go wrong, what's the biggest , largest, widest (you get the idea) vehicle you guys have ever driven? S. Quote
Reidy Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 4 Axle, 150 ton, 660 BHP V10 twin turbo MAN Tractor unit and 10 axle Nooteboom Low loader. Loaded with huge concrete column for mounting wind turbine to ! Very very scary thing to drive ! Quote
Blatman Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I was allowed (briefly) to tale the helm of the Free Enterprise the 8th cross channel ferry during a trip across to France some years ago. I doubt I'll ever have my hands on the tiller of anything bigger... Quote
neilwillis Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 62 tons of Chieftain tank. 8 gallons to the mile - and it was a diesel! Quote
Renmure Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 My mum lives in Texas and drives a Dodge Ram truck which I think has the same V10 500BHP engive from the Viper. I have driven that a few times. She says she drives it because "it makes her feel safe" and that she has "never hit anything that was moving.. but had hit a few things that weren't" I made sure I didnt stand still!!! Jim Quote
Boomy Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I'm not sure it counts, but a 200 foot tower crane. Believe me though, it feels more like 1000 foot as you climb it Quote
scruffythefirst Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 72ft narrow boat and 70ft dutch barge, and my dax Quote
SimonT Posted June 27, 2006 Author Posted June 27, 2006 A tank and a ferry - impressive! I like the sound of the tractor though Quote
tankerman24 Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 62' long 44 tonne waggon and drag truck. (nothing to do with dressing up as a woman) before you ask. Quote
Yobbo Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 A couple of large boats briefly under supervision (one a car ferry) and several 55 foot HGV's. Would love to try the Army's new Oshkosh tank transporters - 150ton laden I think earthmoving equipment is the most fun though and I would also like to drive a Cat 797 or a Leibherr 282 dump truck which come in at about 450 tons loaded. Richgm Posted June 27, 2006 Posted June 27, 2006 I've driven (on private land) and reversed a 38 ton artic with no training what so ever and full underpants. Quote
