LOBRO cv joint orientation/ cork seals

Fitting cv joints and gaiters to half shafts amongst other things today, but suffering from build manual lack of detail.

1. The LOBRO cv joint grooved side the manual says locates the metal dust ring/gaiter, which are both obviously on the inner of the shaft,..but the build manual says the grooves should both be inboard?! Does this mean that the inner (diff) end cv joint  groove should be against the diff or inner on the shaft. I'm confused.

2. The LOBRO cv joints come with a sticky cork gasket but this is not mentioned in the instructions or the manual, does this go inside the metal dust cover/gaiter or between the cv joint/drive flange faces?

Any help much appreciated

Grooves to outside of driveshaft.

If you have cork gaskets they go between gaiter flange and lobro. The cork gaskets ive been told can be left out if you feel the need.

Peter thanks..but,

This is even more confusing because this is the total opposite of what the build manual says. That states 'inboard'.

That could mean in the centre of the car or towards the centre of the shaft. The scorpio manual in your link effectively has one inboard to the car and the other outboard to the hub/upright?

Am I being thick here. One must be right but they seem to contradict each other.

Ive put mine as per scorpio manual.I know the westfield manual contradicts this. Also i have a haynes manual says same as scorpio manual.

The link is for the Ford workshop manual so should be the correct way of fitting lobro.

MVS, If I remember right do you have the Sport 2000? J

Just something to watch, my lobros came ready assembled from the factory and have been installed for a while. I have just noticed recently that something which resembles oil is dripping out of them?

To top this off oil is leaking out of the dip stick sump area... I'm so glad I bought all new equipment, don't want any of those old vehicle leaking problems :)

I will ask factory what it's all about  ???

Yup, sport 2000 in bits as just got back on Friday with Mods 3,4,5,& 6.

Obviously with a few shortages

Exhaust manifold for one which was recalled for some reason, might be worth cheching with parts that your's is OK. May have just been mine that was welded incorrectly, don't know any more on that one.

No LSDiff so haveing to build with an open one for now, which is a pain so may try Quaife ATB if not too expensive.

Oh and propshaft special bolts, so a bit stumped for anything to do

Have you any info on fitting padded race seats as cant see any in manual?

Oh can you see the grooves on your half shafts? Which way are they orientated?

have seen joint fitted with the groove either way round, also seen joints without a groove as well

I dont think it matters. I asked WF and if I can remember correctly the grove is on the CVJ end, i.e. the cover hides it. No cork seals installed, was advised by WF not to install as apparently makes more difficult to torque up.

Thanks Chaps,

Any of you know roughly how much Quaife ATB if for sierra diff?

Thanks for this

Know anyone who's fitted one?

Is it a DIY or pro job?

Sorry MVS, like I said, mine were fully assembled when they came, so it was a case of install and torque up bolds.

Just thought it was strange why oil (not grease) was dripping out of joints!!

As for the seats, I stuck with the standard ones. I decided to build more of a tourer than a racer, so gone for contoured dash etc.

I'm getting very p'eed off now. I am still waiting for dials. Theses are now stopping me from completing the build and once again I have well exceeded the specified lead in time of 3.5. weeks.

I hope you have more luck with your missing parts mate. We should be ready for the winter.

Noticed yesterday whilst doing a spanner check on car a small residue of what looks like oil on one of the lobro joint i know mine had the black grease because i assembled them myself and the small residue had definately came out of the joint.

I'llbet the 'oil' coming out is the base of the graphite grease once warm trickling a bit.

I wonder whether the cork seals prevent this?

Lukeyboy, if it's not the LSDiff it's the dials, cos they're a shortage on my list too. I am pencilling in a Christmas eve SVA

The "oil" coming out is likely simply condensation that is contaminated with a small amount of CV grease. There is moisture *everywhere*...
