goofballs Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Has anyone fitted ohlins or penske on any mega series car ? I need to change the current Spax that I have on my megablade. They are pretty poor with very little control and damping reaction time. Any ideas on sources and costs as well. thanks... Quote
Al Yupright Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Aurok are the UK distributors. Very nice. But quite pricey. Most people seem to go for Nitrons as they're cheaper and still very good. Undecided whether to use Nitrons or Ohlins on my next car... Quote
adhawkins Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 People have started using Protech too (they're based in Wiltshire), and AVOs are a common replacement. Andy Quote
Al Yupright Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Not really on the same level as Nitron/Ohlins/Penske though. Quote
Martin Keene Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 I have seen Penske fitted to a Westfield, I think it might have been the 1.6 SBD car... Quote
goofballs Posted June 13, 2006 Author Posted June 13, 2006 Just phoned Aurok. 1 way adjustable for 50% road and 50% track use is £1400 +VAT, including geometry setup and stuff. 2 way adjustable for 50% road and 50% track use is £1800 +VAT, including geometry setup and stuff. this is plenty of money, but this is always my number one upgrade on the list. I don't like it when the car is hopping from one bump onto another without the damping keeping up...it feels very unsafe to me. If I were to go for the 1 way adjustables, it would work out as follows... They are going to weigh the car and take measurements to customise the dampers (lets say £140 for this), and, put a correct geometry setup from a proper race mechanic (lets say £200 for this), so I suppose they are more like £1300 incl VAT. Which is not far off the NITRON suspension. thanks for your help guys, Quote
gadrego Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 If you search through the for sale section, there was a fella on here doing a good deal on Leda gear as well. Not sure how quality compares though. Slighly OT but are Penske linked with the Indycar cars of yesteryear? Quote
Keith Scarfe Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 May be worth a quick chat with Northampton Motorsport. I am pretty sure it was Ohlin that Troy used when he did a race suspension experiment on his race car for the BARC championship. His idea was that you could gain a similar amount of time in damper technology as you could by going for a pukka blueprinted race engine (Dunnell etc). The engine would cost around £5K, the dampers/springs/setup, £2k. He defo improved his lap times with this setup, but he was also improving himself as well (learning the car/tracks/racing in general), so not too sure how much the dampers gave. They are expensive but obviously worth something when you are talking racing lap times. Quote
Al Yupright Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Not as expensive as I thought...I'd have to give them very serious consideration given how close they are to the Nitrons. Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 I think Mark Smith (Smithy on here) uses them on his 2.0 VX sprint car. He does very well with them on but to say that its just down to the make of dampers on his car is an injustice to Mark's driving skills! John Quote
goofballs Posted June 13, 2006 Author Posted June 13, 2006 I don't think it has to do with just lap times, there is a safety aspect as well. If you were going down a B-road (doing the statutory 60mph speed limit) or on a track, and you were coming round a corner, and suddenly you need to do an emergency stop...I guarantee that a better suspension setup will allow you to brake while off balance...and stop quicker. How much better than a set of nitrons, I don't really know, however, ohlins have been supporting the top end of the motorsport market for quite a few years...so I'll stick to them. Only for a certain set of people the upgrade is more worthwhile (in lap times) than an equivalent upgrade in the engine department. To get full benefit, you have to be able to drive on the limit on a 110mph corner for you to take seconds off your lap times. That is where a fast reacting quality damper makes the most difference!!! Crappy setups will allow you to go through it at 90mph....skipping like a kangaroo....a good suspension setup with a high quality damper will feel like you are riding on a magic carpet as you go through at 110mph. cheers, Quote
pistonbroke Posted June 13, 2006 Posted June 13, 2006 Slighly OT but are Penske linked with the Indycar cars of yesteryear? Just a little Roger Penske Quote
