Anyone got a mondeo v6? Mine seems to have an appetite for alternators. The first died at 60k and now the second has died at 100k. This one has siezed solid and apparently (according to the rac man) welded itself to the main aux belt (presumably when the wife changed gear) and stalled the engine. Trying to restart it wouldn't break the bond between the alt pulley and the belt and the engine wouldn't turn over and it was (again apparently) pulling more than 700Amps. He cut the belt off and it starts and drives fine but obviously the alt is b*******ed and I have to swap it out. Last time I did this it took me nearly all day as it's in an incredibly stupid place.

If they're so damn weak then why not put them in a place where you can get the the b*stard things?! bl**** fwd production toss pot cars... bah!

Cheers, done the job before so just venting spleen really :)

New record for removal of alternator... 2 hours. It's a nightmare to get to. You have to join several extension bars together and try and get the socket on the nut and then turn the ratchet in such a small place. Fortunately this time I was able to use the air ratchet on 2 bolts so they came out relatively easily but the last small one was 40 minutes with a 10mm spanner to take off.

The bearings in the alternator are just toast though, can just about turn the pulley but it has *loads* of play... feels just like all the bearings have simply fallen out. Lucky it didn't shatter really.

Regards,

Mark
