Julian N Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 there's a long story but the result of it was a gearbox full of rusty water. I've opened the lid and the gears themselves seemed rust free so got most of the crap out and freed the sycros etc so I can now select all the gears. filled it with oil and refitted to the car. The issue is, as you might expect, the gear box doesn't sound too great. In your collective opinions should I 1. run the car for a bit change the oil regularly and see if the box quietens down. 2. take it out now, while I have the hoist etc sat waiting, and get it looked at. also will an oil additive help? I seem to remember you can get a tube of 'stuff' that you add to the oil to improve lubrication. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 the gears maybe rust free, but what about the needle rollers on the main and lay shafts, may well be rusty and wearing quickly. Is it an expensive box, if its just a bog standard type 9 or so, i'd just get another from the breakers. Quote
Blatman Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I agree. If it's had water in it for any length of time, chances are it's scrap... Quote
Julian N Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Thanks both. I'll add gearbox to the list of things I need to buy...... Quote
