Ravan Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 I think this topic has been on before but I can't find it. I have a factory built Westy with type 9 gearbox and when I start from cold the box is a little noisey unless I dip the clutch so am a bit worried that the oil level is low -or even empty?. From looking on google the filling / level plug is on the passenger side and quite a sod to get to. If I peel the carpet back there is a fairly large hole a little back from the end of the footwell with a plastic bung in it, is this an access to the plug? Cheers, Mark. Quote
davidgh Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 99% likely, yes. Are you sure, however, that the noise you are hearing is not just the clutch thrust bearing? Quote
Thrustyjust Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 yes it is.You will need a 1/2 inch drive square to slot it into the plug to remove IIRC.I put a tray under the gearbox to collect any oil when filling,as I do it on my own (no friends ;-).And it also catches the plug which is a bastaad to get in afterwards Quote
CrashBangWallop Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 I use a fairly large (12 or 13mm) allen key to get my gearbox plug out and it's a piece of pee to put back in. Neil Quote
Chris.B Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 I've recently fitted a BGH (Type 9) box and cut a hole about 3 inches diameter in the passenger footwell panel. I then riv nutted a plate over the hole so I could easily remove it to get access to the drain / refill plug. Quote
Blatman Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 The noise that disapears when the clutch is dipped is the clutch/clutch release bearing rattling. It's normal, and it isn't lubricated so filling the 'box with oil won't help. Checking the oil level from time to time won't hurt though. ONLY use a GL4 spec oil in a type 9... Quote
