adhawkins Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Anyone comment on the legality of CVL and CVL Turbo? I was considering using it (after a recommendation from the engine builder) but obviously won't if it's questionable for Sprinting... Andy Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Optimax is available as a "pumped" fuel and just fine and CVL is allowable as it is a valve lube or something or other .......... but octane booster isn't Which bit did you miss Quote
adhawkins Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Ok, so CVL is Ok, cos it's called a 'Competition Valve Lubricant', despite the fact that it also boosts octane. However, CVL Turbo is called an 'Octane Booster' so isn't allowed? Andy Quote
adhawkins Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 Yeah, I plan on doing just that. Wondered if anyone 'knew' though. Andy Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 I'll try again......... CVL is fine Octane Booster is not That applies to anything labelled as Octane Booster see not a in sight Quote
windy Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 There's plenty of "pump" fuels out there that have high octane Quote
a4gom Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Av gas comes out of a pump On a more serious note Mark this is available from your local airport at approx 145 ron (or whatever its rated in) If you speak to the right man you can get your hands on the litres and litres of stuff they run of for tests and samples A mate of mine mixes this with standard unleaded for use in his extremely modified turbo and it works out a lot cheaper than super unleaded + additives Quote
adhawkins Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Ok, just to get this clear in my head, I checked the blue book. In section 'P' under 'Pump Fuel' it says: Only additives to this Motor Gasoline Fuel solely for the purpose of lead replacement are allowed. CVL is described on Miller's web site as high technology fuel treatment for adding to petrol to improve performance and provide protection for engines operating in highly stressed conditions. Valve seat lubricant and combustion enhancer based on advanced manganese chemistry No mention of lead replacement there. I'm not being (deliberately) pedantic about this, I just want to understand what is and isn't allowed (and yes, Mr. Chairman sir, I know you've said CVL is allowed, I just want to understand how it gets past the barring of all additives that aren't for lead replacement purposes). I'd hate to use this at an event and fall foul of the regulations through not fully understanding them. Cheers Andy Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 But Andy, isn't that a pretty good description of what lead did? So it would follow that it's just mimicking the lead. i.e. lead replacement. Quote from some DTI site or other: Lead in petrol did two things. Firstly it increased the fuel's octane rating making it less prone to 'knock' or 'pinking'.... Secondly it protected the engine's exhaust valve seats from wear. Quote
adhawkins Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 But Andy, isn't that a pretty good description of what lead did? I don't know, that's why I was asking Just trying to understand how CVL fits in with the regulations. If it does, then fine, but as I said I'd hate to fall foul at an event... Andy Quote
cast iron Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 If in doubt dont use it If you are sure then use it and prove it Avgas eh - lucky the girlfriend is a pilot Quote
adhawkins Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Bit more, I took a look at a bottle at lunchtime. It specifically says on the bottle that this is a lead replacement, but that it has the benefit of increased octane etc. I presume this is why it's Ok? Andy Quote
scoobydevil Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 if it has to be pumped fuel i can rig up a pump and a small fuel bowser of 100+ octaine fuel and pump as much as you all need . or is that still cheating? Quote
John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 I buy my Millers products from Performance Oils who happen to sell what you are looking for at good prices. The more you buy, the cheaper it is as the carriage becomes more viable. John Quote
