cast iron Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Does anyone know where I can buy in bulk or nothing smaller than 2.5 litres - Octane booster? I have tried 76Petroleum, Carless, Shell, BP websites but they just want to sell blended petrol Thieving Geeks etc only sell 1 litre tins The reason!! My new stead is supposed to run on super unleaded, at 5p/litre price difference I reckon it must be cheaper to DIY. The car does approx 23MPG and I'm doing 18k/year. so there must be a payback Quote
adhawkins Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Tried Millers? They've got an octane booster too (MVL or something like that? ) Andy Quote

steve_m Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 See if you can find a friendly printer who will sell you some toluene, very cheap and an excellent additive to petrol to increase the octane. F1 cars in the turbo era used this mixed with a splash of petrol apparantly and they were running 4 or 5 bar of boost. Quote
potster Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 The ingridients you require are found in thinners. Theres loads of info on this ont tinterweb. Google is your friend Quote
funbobby Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Try Motorscope in Northallertom Mark. We got some and it made quite a difference - mind you we didnt exacly follow the instructions - we just shot half of it in Slippys car Balls to measuring. The guy in the rally shop said half to each tank is what they stick in their rally cars. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Try Cat Motorsport or see club magazine Millers advert CVL is not octane booster as such mind you we didnt exacly follow the instructions - we just shot half of it in Slippys car I hope you're not suggesting you used octane booster whilst competing in an MSA sprint meeting it is illegal for comp use Quote
adhawkins Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 I hope you're not suggesting you used octane booster whilst competing in an MSA sprint meeting it is illegal for comp use It is? Didn't realise that... Glad to know before I considered using it. What about Optimax? Does that count? It's octane boosted fuel... Andy Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Optimax is available as a "pumped" fuel and just fine and CVL is allowable as it is a valve lube or something or other .......... but octane booster isn't I believe air entrained Elf racing fuel might be available at as a pumped fuel as well ................................ How much a litre Quote
adhawkins Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 Ok, sorry to bang on about this... But what about CVL Turbo? On the bottle it says that is a 'Octane Booster' (CVL says on the bottle 'Competition Valve Lubricant'? According to this, CVL gives an octane boost of about 2.5, CVL turbo about 3.1). Andy Quote
steve_m Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 There was a test done a few years ago by a magazine that found that most of the bottled octane boosters didn't work, at least not in the quantities you were told to add them to the tank, 250ml or so for a 50 litre tank etc. One of the few that did was NF Black, they claimed it raised RON by 6 points but IIRC it only raised it by 2 or 3. I tried it in my last car which had peak boost of 28psi and it did work, I could see the engine holding the boost for longer and on a hot day it also hit a higher peak boost than without it, but too much of it would make it misfire. The boost was too high for the turbo anyway, it was a pointless exercise. I wouldn't use any of these potions again. Quote
cast iron Posted May 10, 2006 Author Posted May 10, 2006 I hope you're not suggesting you used octane booster whilst competing in an MSA sprint meeting it is illegal for comp use Shame on you for suggesting such a thing Mr.S as my original post said it is for my tin top which is thirsty for 98 Ron. Again thanks to people who have said Cat, Rally design, etc. but they only sell poxy little bottles, I have an 80 litre fuel tank and expect to use a lot of it Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 10, 2006 Posted May 10, 2006 I would never suggest it was for your car Mr L The quote was taken from Funbobby's posting about adding it to Maudes CVH tut tut Quote
