Hi guys, I have noticed that i have a oil leak coming from the rear of gearbox where the drive shaft comes out of. I was thinking about removing the gearbox to change whatever seal it is.

But before i do how the hell do i go about getting the box out? (removed many a box on old capri & rs2000 but this is my first westy & lookes very awkward)

I have westy SEi with 2.0 pinto, type 9 box and LSD.

cheers.

You might be able to, but know I can't get the prop off mine without removing the engine and sliding the gear box forward.  :(

You should be able to do this all insitu, providing you can remove propshaft.

Cant really get to either end of prop, one to undo flange bolts and second to replace the seal if i got prop off. Either end of prop is about 2 inches into tunnel bit of car. Is the prop held in gearbox with anything? or is it just pushed in/ pulled out?

Also where the hell is the oil filler plug on gearbox? i wana put a bit of oil in till i can get round to doing it.

You can probably get away with dismounting and moving the engine/box forward, and dropping off the prop shaft.   Depending on how much clearance you have in front of the engine, you should be able to get to the filler with the box in a wider part of the tunnel too.

For a more permanent fix for gaining access to the oil filler, bore a hole in the ali panel over the filler, and plug it with a big rubber grommit.

Thanks neil, what an excellent solution. but before i could drill a hole there is one there already with a gromit in....How the hell did i miss that....lol

Sierra diff or Escort diff?

What's in the way of the diff flange bolts? They look reasonably accessable on both my cars (one an Escort diff, one a Sierra diff...), and indeed are quite easy to get at/get off. It's a little time consuming, but eminently do-able. Or I'm missing something...

On my old car with the english diff in the westfield ally ind housing the nose was up the tunnel so to speak.

I drilled through the tunnel with a 3 1/2" hole saw to give access then fitted a removable 4 1/2" plate over this.

I do my Escort diff flange bolts from underneath. Takes a while, but I haven't found it necessary to chop holes in anything or worry about access with the spanners...

Blats, my diff is one with a westy housing on back (its LSD) duno what the front bit is from but my flange bolts are up the tunnel too.

I managed to use neil's advice to top up the gearbox. Took just over a litre, bl**** thing must ave been nearly empty. No wonder it was notchy.

You have an Escort diff then. Unless you have something odd in the way of tunnel panelling, you *can* get the bolts out of the diff flange.
