langy Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 I'm thinking of swapping my company car for a Golf V5 or V6 4 motion, has anyone on here owned 1 of these or have any comments, or what to look out for when looking at them TIA Sean Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Would personally go for a standard vr6. Not sure if the 4 motion is any real use as its only switched on with slip - ie a muddy field. V5 motor doesnt have a great rep. Quote
thos Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 2 different V5 motors, 10v and 20v being 150bhp and 170bhp respectively. Should be a red V for the 20v 170bhp, but I'd check the boot stick for kw rating to be safe. Being honest, I dont think the V5 is up to much, the 1.8T gotta be a better motor alround. V6 4motion is a nice yolk, heavy and still probably wouldnt set the world on fire, but certainly a nice cruiser. Quote
markh1970 Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 As a owner of a V6 4Motion, then a MkIV R32 and now a current owner of a MkV R32, I hope I can add something to the decision. My take on the standard V6 is that it is a great motorway tourer, but is a very heavy unresponsive (steering and direction change wise) car. Has poke yes, but if you can stretch to the MkIV R32 then go for it. The MkIV is much better set up for twisty stuff, the engine has a large dollup of grunt (240bhp) and the looks and noise (the exhaust note is loved by all who drive one). The interior is far superior to the V6 (which is a standard golf with a big engine - the R32 gets new seats and interior fittings). If you can stretch to the MkV R32 then that is all the old ones pluses, with an even better chassis and is more spacious. The new MkV R32 has 250bhp and with the DSG gearbox is hitting 0-62mph in 5.5 to 6seconds. Not bad as it still weights 1500kg+!!! So if the budget can stretch then go for the MkIV R32 (or MkV if you have 25K plus and OK to wait 6 months for one!. The V6 is not a bad car, but as mentioned I would either move down to a MkIV 1.8T (the red 'I' GTI) or again if budget permits the new MkV GTI. All about costs really.... Quote
scoobydevil Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 after the last post this is just my 2p's worth . before i got my first scooby i drove loads of 4wd cars the 4motion being the first of many i disliked the lack of power compared the other cars i drove and the fact like all vag cars the 4wd system (as scruff says)is not permanent this make fast in/out of roundabouts interesting ,my test drive of the golf was 24hrs so there was no salesman to sit in the passenger seat i drove the car how i intended to drive it if i bought one. I would say at around the 30K mark the r32 is very expensive for what you get. i would go for any big turbo'ed Subaru, impreza or legacy maybe a forester" turbo s" they all have permant 4wd are are quick. or if it has to be VW the gt tdi golf 130 ,easy to tune up and lots of power and torque returns for your money they will if you pester order you a 4motion version. how every VW are in my experience very strick on mods while the car is in warranty. markh1970 Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Have to agree with Scoob on the other choices here. The Impreza was not my 'cup of tea' as they say, not a fan of the styling, and thought it a little raw. I do a lot of motorway driving so extra comfort is good. That said the Subaru is an awesome car for the money, and would like to have one in the garage, but would still keep the R32. They are different cars really, and cost is one issue for not only what you get, but what you need from the car. I think my post was really trying to say the MkIV V6 4Motion is a bit heavy and ponderous, and other alternatives present themselves. Mark Quote
Ted Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Skoda Octavia VRS? If you could live without 4x4 its a lot of car for the money, huge boot coupled with good handling and 200bhp. Ted Quote
scoobydevil Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 yer agreed it all depends on what you want the car for , my scooby cruses very happily down the motorway at 70 ish and is just as happy around brum. i find the scooby practical apart from the boot hinges it is a fast safe 5 seat 4wd sports car , i am after stoneleigh looking at a forester turbo s or a spec b legacy, depends how much the insurance cough up. ted no need to do without 4wd on the octavia, just push the dealer to supply one. langy Posted May 7, 2006 Author Posted May 7, 2006 Cheers for the responses. My budget won't stretch to an R32, i have a limit of £10 max. I owned a MY 97 impreza turbo and thoroughly enjoyed it, but servicing was getting very expensive as i drive over 20k a year. Most of my miles are A roads and motorways, in reality it probably won't see a track (thats what the Xtreme is for ) Being honest, I dont think the V5 is up to much I have read this and having had a Focus ST170 (which i didn't click with) probably puts me off a V5. Just need to find a friendly VW garage with a V6 and take it for a spin. Ta, Sean Quote
Ted Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 ted no need to do without 4wd on the octavia, just push the dealer to supply one. Didn't realise you could get a 4wd VRS that would be one hell of a car for the money. Quote
MVS Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 The vrs octavia is 2wd only @ present, the 4x4 octavia is either FSi or TDi only. That's unless my dealer is telling me porkies as have just bought an octavia & asked the question Quote
GWatson Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Seat Leon Cupra R or the 150bhp Leon FR diesel??? Quote
scoobydevil Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 yes he is they have 4wd drive vrs skoda's in germany i was there for october fest. may have to be an import but can't see why VAG can't supply one to the uk. found the leon small in the back for adults but quick. Quote
gadrego Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 How about an Accord Type R? Or if it has to be RWD/4WD how about a 330/325 or an A4 quattro. Had a Mk IV GTi turbo and they're fine but not exactly exciting. Quote
