Thrustyjust Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Anyone own one or know of anything to put me off buying a new one? Not sure whether to Diesel or 2ltr petrol.Probably calling Jeff C. Quote
Barry Ashcroft Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I have at the moment a new peugeot 407 sw estate 2.0td and it pains me to say (Its French) that I am very impressed with it it is a X-Line model with 17" alloys, cruise, climate, single cd plus changer, auto lights & wipers and a masssive glass roof it is a very comfy drive and it flies for a big car I have this why I wait to order a new passat estate but if the peugeot was on my list I think I might have ordered it instead. Don't waste your time with petrol go for a diesel every time. BUT if the list was bigger it would be an Audi A4 Avant EVERYTIME Quote
peterg Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Honda diesel is one of the best and the estate is well specced and roomy I just went for a 330d because it's RWD and Honda don't (didn't then anyway) do an auto Quote
scoobydevil Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 i have just handed back a ford mondeo tdi and i can say it is a super car good spec comfy to drive, handles well for the class and the tdi engine is just a dream push the go pedal and it does. had a new 53plate 307 estate diesel and it was very bad bits fell of the inside as i went over speed bumps and to comply with the new pedestrian protection regs it had a cover over the engine , the plastic supports would break (as they are designed to do in the event of an in pact)the cover vibrated and dislodged the oil filler cap after the 3rd time in 6 months i swapped it for the mondeo. MVS Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Just had a refund on a 30k Discovery 3, and having driven / looked at every estate known to man, have ordered a SkodaOctavia 2.0 TDi PD Elegance DSG auto. They are well specced 4k less than A4 or Passat, and I think everyone should have a go in a DSG cos it's an eye opener. Oh, have heard that the Honda deisel engine has had some mapping and turbo niggles. See the What car site and read some of the reader reviews, also electric boot lid can be a problem. Quote
Thrustyjust Posted May 6, 2006 Author Posted May 6, 2006 MVS,I did read the what car site.We have an Audi 2.5tdi and the engine is not healthy. We are trying to get it working for a trade in.We only do 7k a year,so the extra 2k for the Diesel is undecided. We have been offered a 2005 spec exec manual 2ltr with 0 miles on it for 17k,list when avail was 21k and a 10k ex demo diesel sport for 16k.People on the What car site claim only 38-40 mpg for the Diesel,so only a few more than the petrol. Don't fancy French.Have had a company Peugot in the past and that was 'flimsy' and the clutch went in 9k.Mondeo is another possibility, but the wife says 'everyone has them' Blimey, were hanging on public transport and shes fussy. FlatSix2003 Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Hi, I've currently got the CDTi saloon version. Must say that having had a Focus TDCi and numerous Golf TDI's that it's potentially one of the most refined diesel engines out there. I've driven a large number of diesels as part of my job so have a wide comparison base. Only potential downside is that it averaged around 39mpg, although my other half has a slightly heavy right foot and it is quite a large car. The optional 17" alloys also make the ride slightly taughter/harsher depending on what you're looking for but I preferred it this way. Lot sof toys as standard on the exec version when compared to other similarly priced cars too. Jon Quote
Rob Navin Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 I have got the 2.4 petrol saloon version and its great. I have had the car seven months and done aroung 20,000 miles and so far I have only put a set of disks and pads on. Thats the only thing I have spent on it, ( I must service it soon though ) I got the car at 50000 miles. More than happy with the honda quality Quote
JeffC Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 I bought one for the guy that does my website, (a saloon car,) Personally I cant see the attraction and I thing the estate is one of the ugliest cars on the market, only one step forward from a fiat multipla My man went from an A6 avant 130 tdi to this 2.4 vtec , he reckons the audi feels a more quality car and feels suprisingly quicker !! but he prefers the Honda and is now selling his avant suppose it takes allsorts Quote
steve_m Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 only one step forward from a fiat multipla That bad ? Quote
JeffC Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 only one step forward from a fiat multipla That bad ? oh yes. straight from the ugly tree , I reckon they added the quarter panel twice, its like a hearse Quote
Bill.Ashworth Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Assuming that the person concerned has this car on his short list, I would also assume that he is fairly comfortable with the appearance of the car and the fact that no estate will win any beauty contests, so appearance is largely academic. I have a 2.4 Tourer auto, mainly because it was the best choice on a rather limited company car list. It is an excellent car, comfortable, powerful enough, economic, and the 6 foot load space is cavernous - amazing how quickly things you didn't think you needed become indispensable! I really wasn't expecting to like this car, as it replaced my (rather impressive) Accord Type R. In many ways it's actually better. Quote
felters Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 Slightly off thread but my Volvo V70T5 has been a pleasant surprise... bought it when I was doing a huge amount of motorway mileage (now back down to around 25k pa) it has 100k miles on it but hasn't missed a beat. SWMBO asked if I was going to change it for something else and I couldn't think of a reason why I should. If you don't do a big mileage and the petrol costs aren't a big issue it's worth a look. The T5 sells for nothing secondhand. You'd be brave to buy a new one though... Quote
Thrustyjust Posted May 7, 2006 Author Posted May 7, 2006 My issues for buying one is that it's practical (young and growing family) A4 has no legroom in the back for kiddies in booster seats.More space than the A4 in the boot. More reliable than the A4 (new and japanese),lower insurance group 10 rather than 15 for Audi,as I will probably have to be the main driver in the future and have no 'no claims' as a company vehicle user for 15 years. The looks are different, grant you that, but it's different and a Mondeo is more bland and that is going to be replaced in the next year or so,so prices will plummet second hand to nothing.I think the deal is heading for a petrol, after a few calculations at Derns house yesterday on recouping the extra outlay for buying/running it.I will only do 7k a year. Mike,I did think about the Volvo and a nice car it is,just a bit pricey for me and we still have that 'old' Volvo stigma in our family from always having 343's and 240's in my parents garage from years gone by,even when I said to the wife about them, she called me an old git!!!! Thanks for all you comments and when you 'fail to procede' in the future, the ugly car will still be crusing by. Quote
