Sam Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Is there such thing as a carbon fibre sump for zetecs? Quote
cng1 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 It would be feasable to make CF sumps but I *really* wouldn't fancy it, not never in a million years. One big stone thrown up and you've got a completely incontinent sump rather than a dinged one, also bear in mind that peak oil temps will soften up the resin so gaskets will have an interesting time. RICHARD+PHILIP Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Once again Nice idea But.... Carbon fibre although strong has a low impact resistance. If you Really wanted a composite sump then Kevlar one would be a better alternative. (it has a much higher impact resistance) Although you would still struggle to get an epoxy to withstand the oil. So... Possible but not recommended Quote
sir camel toe Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 errr the f1 teams use them sump and dry sump tank ive seen them for sale second hand in f1 mercandise shop in sheffield Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 errr the f1 teams use them sump Yeah, but they dont have to deal with speedbumps, rocks, kerbs, raised manhole covers etc. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 carbon isnt as brittle as you think No, but your not going to save much weight over an ali one, you can't see it (so no bling factor), its going to be really expensive, and has a much higer chance of destroying your engine if you do hit something with it. gee_fin Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Don't see any reason why it would have a higher chance - I'd have more faith* in a 3mm+ pre-preg carbon structure than the usual thin magnesium or alloy sumps I've used (and holed) in the past. *but not enough £££s to wish to fund it mind you Quote
mhc Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I rather like the idea of a carbon sump pan. There would be no problem with oil temperature. Lots of weight saving, approximatly 60%-70% High impact resistance, (if you are already crashing your sump your ride height is too low). A small footprint, so not a lot of carbon. The idea certainly has merit. At the Autosport Show ,there was a carbon/kevlar sump pan on the SPA stand, I believe it was for a Subaru, very nice. Then again if you wanted to lower your centre of gravity make your sump out of the heaviest material you can, regards. Quote
sir camel toe Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 i dont know if anyone makes them for a zetec but if you wont one making it will be very expensive the tooling cost for starter will be very expensive then you've got the cost of materails ie pre preg cloth relise film breather fabric bagging materail so on so on. but dont rule it out the chap you wont to talk to is mick cooper (mickmade) he really knows his stuff Quote
Major Stare Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 also bear in mind that peak oil temps will soften up the resin so gaskets will have an interesting time. Ther was/is a guy selling nice carbon rocker covers for X-Flows on the Locost Builders forum. But someone also said it wouldnt work. Shame really, i was very tempted Quote
