chazpowerslide Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 I'm making up the loom for my Emerald ECU and for the Crank Position Sensor I need some 2 core wire that's sheilded. The two wires within the sheild needs to be 0.5mm sq (mininimum) and the sheild it's self needs to be stranded wire (not a foil sleeve). I have tried everywhere locally but have drawn a blank (Maplins, Halfords, the loacl motor factors). Can anybody help out on this? I'd like to be up and running by Monday. TIA Chaz. Quote
Kevin Wood Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 I wouldn't regard these two criteria as being that critical. The wire carries no significant current so the diameter of the wires is really only influencing its strength and foil insulated wire will do the job as well if not better. Have a look for some cable designed for balanced microphones. Something like Maplin XR20W or XS40T would work OK. The only problem with most audio screened cable is that it's probably not rated for automotive temperature ranges and it's a little more fragile than most cable used in cars but then I've used it for years and not had any problems. melt Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 Chaz, I used 4 core shielded wire and joined the wire as two pairs. Used heat resistant sleeving to cover the cable. If you can't find any cable, let me know and I can probably get some from a mate (I know he has a 25 metre reel of it) Mel Quote
chazpowerslide Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 Thanks for the replys. The main issue I have is when crimping the terminals on the force of the crimp shears the wire. The stuff I have is 8 strand (about .25mm sq) I'm a bit worried that this is going to break/fatigue quickly. I'll have a look on the net at the microscope stuff............. Thanks. Chaz. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 I've got some you can have chaz and if you want to come and pick it up you can bleed my brakes too! I'll have a look and see how long it is. Alternatively, I think polevolt stock it, they've been really helpful for me. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 just had a look, i've got 3m. The cores are quite thin, but thicker than the stuff i used. As its crimped and held in the plug its not stressed around the join and its got a thick jacket so it wont be stressed down the cable with a decent boot on the plug. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 Cheers Hugh. Where abouts are you again? Can I pop over later today (evening) Chaz. Quote
pistonbroke Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 I'm very suprised you can't get this from maplins or RS componants , its a very common stock item . Ask for twin core microphone cable , its good quality stuff ,has to stand the rigours of rock band life so should be good for the wessy Have you tried (musical Instrument) , Guitar shops ? Quote
chazpowerslide Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 Is the stuff that you have Pole Volt ref SCN2? If it is it's just the ticket Chaz. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 Hi MOTCO, the Maplins stock stuff is really thin, it looks like Hugh has come up trumphs. Pole Volt have it as a stock item, I've not tried RS. Chaz Quote
scruffythefirst Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 Is the stuff that you have Pole Volt ref SCN2? I didn't get mine from polevolt, I got a lot of other stuff from them and the service was excellent but I already had the shielded stuff. Quote
