Broadband Service

Okay all you techies, my broadband connection is currently with Tesco and is basically crap, we do not have cable in the area so who is the best?

the problem I have is that it downloads very slow at sometimes, and I mean slow. Tesco have asked for line speed tests to be done by me but it is so slow when not working right the sites do not load before timing out.

It is not the computer, as I bought a brand new one (doh!;) and the problem still exists. It is intermitant with no pattern of time.

Who is best or recommendations of sites to judge.

check out adslguide for impartial advice.  There is the ability to compare ISPs on speed, reliability and customer service aswell as seeing current price plans and do a speed test.

I use PlusNet and am happy, Nildram and Zen have come out as consistently good over the last few years.

And this should tell you which ISP are avaliable to you. Clicky :)

Pipex every time.

Ask Tesco what the contention ratio is, and see if they'll tell you how close you are to being at the upper limit of that ratio. The more people on your exchange that use Tesco, the more chance you have of it slowing down when there are lots of users on line at the same time. Or there is a high traffic user nicking all the bandwidth...

Based on previous discussions on here I've just gone wih Pipex. 6 weeks in and no problems. Communication throughout the buying process was very good and I get free phonecalls too :t-up:

Ditto,

Dropped connection only once in 4 years for a coupla hours and it does what it says all the time

IT techy mate who recommended Pipex then went to Nildram and at the moment regrets it FWIW

Zen are very good IME. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. I can hammer my connection 24/7, it never slows down, it has never gone down apart from a BT SNAFU when I'd just moved house and I never get snotty letters about how much bandwidth I'm using.

Another thumbs up for Zen.  As Kevin says, not the cheapest, but rock solid service and you get a static IP address, which I find handy.
