a4gom Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Just knocking up a strut for my motor, thought I best have a look at the blue book for dims etc, don't leave much room for error do they? The strut has to be 254mm tall, the bottom cannot be more than 200mm from the ground and the top can't be less than 454mm from the ground. I'm no mathematician but 200 + 254 =454. Now I might be reading something wrong here but by that result you can either never alter your tyre pressures or have any tyre wear or your going to be adjusting the height of the strut all the time. adhawkins Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Yeah, that's a common complaint about the regs. I'm sure everyone has just done the best they can to meet them. In practice the dimensions aren't that critical I'm sure... Andy Quote
slippy Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Agreed but from what I can gather the scrutes don't carry a tape measure if you know what I mean My question is does it have to be at a right angle ? as currently the angle of grill means is it far from straight Quote
a4gom Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 I've done it now, will take some pics next time I have it fastened on (can't shut garage with it on.) I'm hoping its something like, not sure its the right height from the ground and / or 90 degrees to the floor as the cars sat on 13" wheels at mo and will be running 14" and the concrete floor in my garage is sloping out of the garage and the gradient gets stteper just by my front wheels so I have had to make some educated guesses. John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 I think that you are missing the phrase "at least" in your dimension criteria ie - the bottom can be closer to the road and the top nearer to the sky. John Quote
a4gom Posted March 30, 2006 Author Posted March 30, 2006 the bottom cannot be more than 200mm from the ground and the top can't be less than 454mm from the ground I think thats what I implied? The point I was trying to make was that the MSA were been too specific, they gave two figures for the top and bottom location which were variable but then specified the length of the strut was to be exactly 254mm. If you made it 254mm long there was no option for the top and bottom. The obvious thing to do would be to make it longer to ensure you covered the required band but they specified an actual length. scott beeland Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 Scrutes haven't proved to be that concerned about the dimensions/heights at the sprints I've been to...You should see the improvisation by people who've forgotten to take their timing struts (It happens quite a lot)....bits of tank taped cardboard;plastic offcuts etc....
