Various Sunday Night Questions if yr bored

After a frustrating day in the garage with virtually no progress a few questions if you are bored....

1. I really don't understand why we fit the body before seeing if the engine starts, maybe this is a really stupid question, but starting the engine seems a big thing! and one likely show up a few problems, which are going to be harder to fix if the bodywork is riveted in place, anyone tried this before?

2. I found the clip which presumably is bolted on to hold the battery in place, whilst this will stop the battery falling out sideways, nothing will stop it bouncing up and down, and striking the chassis rail above it? what am I missing?

3. On this zetec 1800 kit I seem to have a bottom engine hose that isn'[t the shape I'd expect, I expet it to turn downwards and then towards the front of the tube to connect to the metal tube that connects it to the radiator (as I have seen on other's photos) but mine only seems to turn forward giving a ridiculous looking position...anyone else had this issue?

4. The factory supplied me with an M8 x 65 bolt to use as a throttle stop but, I still hit the stop on the engine block, long before the pedal rests on the end of the bolt, any ideas?

Thanks in advance ...Tim and Chris

Q1. Not a problem to take engine out if needed to just remove nosecone.

Q2. My battery is in a different place (scuttle) so cant help.

Q.3  looks same bottom hose as mine, no problems joining to rad via supplied ali pipe.

Q.4   I had to use a longer bolt.

Q1. Again, no problem. That's a new engine isn't it?

Q2. Isn't there an Ali bracket at the top of the battery tray that the battery slides under?

Have fun.

The battery 'box' has something missing, there should be a top fastener made up out of a wedge of ali - see photo below:-

Q2. Battery same as yours but has the alloy bracket as per Steppenwolfs picture.

Q3. The bottom hose is an OE part from ford so not Westfield specific, I had to trim mine a little to fit (not the most aesthetically pleasing look) but it works.

Q4. Think I used a 75mm bolt.

Thanks Steppenwolf and Ted, we have an ali component, similar the one in your picture of the battery tray it just came unattached to the tray, nor with any obvious clues like fixing holes to indicate what it was... (and it was one of those many pieces that we was wondering where it fitted!;)

Have just been out to the garage and found it and test fitted it and it's obvious now, thanks again.

The Bottom Hose looks like my original but I now use a different system because of overcooling.

I did enough on mine to start the engine before I got the body on.  I agree with you in that it gave me the chance to have a good look round it when I first started it to make sure that there were no leaks or anything untoward going on, without having to get out the torch and crawl around underneath with it running.

I thought Westfield had 'fixed' this? Or am I mistaken?

Westfield have made a change I believe but their solution is different to mine ....

I think you are both right, I've tried to find some picy's but I haven't got any decent ones here.

'Tim and Chris' let me know if your still having probs, and I'll get a couple of shots of how I did mine... Although I can't promise that it's 'correct' it does work. :D  From looking at your pics and what I remember I'm sure you have that bit as it should be.

Mat.

Just re-read the original post, and I 'think' that the metal tube that connect to that rubber one from the pump, then has another rubber tube attached that bends downwards, near the battery box, and into the rad. I'll get some piccys tonight.

Check this post though, should have all the info you need. Clicky

Ah, ok.

Don't have a Zetec any more so wasn't following too closely, but thought I'd read that they'd fixed it for recent models.

Westfield now feed the thermostat bypass back into the bottom hose. This then stops over cooling.I think before their fed the bypass straight into the rad via the top hose.

Your lower hose looks just like mine too - have faith - it will fit.

I was about to call Westfield to ask what that ally bracket was for; I was also concerned about battery retention - it wasn't exactly obvious.  So, 2 questions answered with 1 picture - that's progress!

P.S.  We've just drawn Liverpool at home in the quarter-final
